A Look At The Most Anticipated Netlfix Releases

Story posted October 4, 2022 in CommRadio, Arts & Entertainment by CommRadio Arts & Entertainment Department

Netflix is constantly pumping out new content weekly, and it's only a matter of time before the next piece of gold strikes.

The CommRadio Arts and Entertainment department takes a look at some of the most interesting releases for the streaming service that's on the horizon.

“Shadow and Bone” Season 2

Netflix struck gold with its development of Leigh Bardugo’s bestselling fantasy book series “Shadow and Bone” back in April 2021. Season 1 consisted of eight episodes, and the second season will follow that format.

The Netflix show combined characters and storylines from both “Shadow and Bone” and Bardugo’s other series “Six of Crows” for an epic first season that spent 12 days in the Top 10 chart on the platform.

A short teaser for the second season of “Shadow and Bone” dropped at Netflix’s Tudum event last weekend, and it looks like more magic and heists are coming in 2023.

New characters were introduced in the first look, including fan-favorite prince/privateer Nikolai Lantsov (Paddy Gibson), the fierce twins Tolya (Lewis Tan) and Tamar (Anna Leong Brophy), and the Crows’ explosives expert Wylan Hendriks (Jack Wolfe).

The teaser hinted at time spent at sea in season two with Nikolai and his crew, a new heist for the Crows as they try to break one of their own out of prison, and the Darkling (Ben Barnes) hunting down sun summoner Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li) and her best friend Mal (Archie Renaux).

If “Shadow and Bone” continues to do justice to the beloved book characters in season two, it should gain the same praise and viewership that it did with its first season. - Kaitlyn Murphy

“Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery”

Following the success of 2019’s “Knives Out,” Netflix quickly picked up the rights to the “sequels,” both directed by Rian Johnson and led by Daniel Craig.

“Knives Out” success came because of its large ensemble cast, original story, along with impeccable writing and directing, both by Johnson. He seems to be picking up right where he left off when writing his new whodunit.

“Glass Onion” brings a whole new cast to the screen and a whole new mystery, the only common thread being Craig’s character, a detective named Benoit Blanc. In “Knives Out,” Blanc was called to investigate a murder set in New England and this time Glass Onion takes the detective to a boat off the coast of Greece.

Johnson told Netflix’s Tudum that he created Glass Onion during the pandemic, while he was imagining he was somewhere on a beach but Johnson still seems invested on creating a great story, calling Knives Out, “a roller coaster and not a crossword puzzle,” which seems to run true with Glass Onion as well.

After its premiere at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival, Glass Onion has received rave reviews from critics and fans alike and is a must see during the holiday season.

“Glass Onion,” officially titled “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” is set to come to Netflix this Dec. 23, and is hopefully also making a run in the theaters as well.

Netflix has even created an interactive website where anyone can catch a sneak peak at the new film if a puzzle is solved at knivesoutmystery.com  - Sophia Clements

“The Redeem Team”

From the filmmakers of the award-winning, boredom-saving, quarantine docuseries “The Last Dance,” comes “The Redeem Team.” This documentary, set to air on Oct. 7, chronicles the 2008 United States men’s basketball team that took home the gold medal at the Summer Olympics in Beijing.

The trailer has sparked excitement not just in the basketball world, but in all of sports. Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni used a promotional clip of Kobe Bryant from the documentary as inspiration for the team before their win against the Washington Commanders.

The trailer briefly highlights the disappointing result of the 2004 Athens Olympics, and the complete revamp of the USA Basketball organization. The 2008 squad was nicknamed “The Redeem Team,” a play on the 1992 “Dream Team,” and a call for redemption.

With interviews from LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, coach Mike Krzyzewski and more, this is sure to be a crowd-pleaser. - Nick LaRosa

“Derry Girls” Season 3

The third season of “Derry Girls” is said to be released Oct. 7, on Netflix. This is said to be the final season of the series.

“Derry Girls,” set in the 1990s, follows the friend group of teenage girls and a boy who attend a Catholic school in Northern Ireland.

Amidst political anguish in their country and living in a town guarded by the British Army the characters get themselves into fascinating situations like having to clean every inch of the local, greasy fish and chips shop nearby. They usually don’t solve these problems in the smartest ways, making each episode all the more interesting and unexpected.

Some watchers may find themselves relating to the shenanigans included in the show, creating a relatable feel no matter if one lives in Ireland or not.

This anticipated final season is hoped to exceed fans’ expectations. What will the Derry Girls get into next? - Cassie Baylis

“Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story”

There are many of Netflix’s upcoming releases that are likely to be all the rave throughout the next months and year, and among them is Shonda Rhimes’s prequel to the “Bridgerton” series “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.”

The series will explore the familiar character Queen Charlotte’s journey in love with King George and her path to leadership. In the previous show, the Queen stood as a comedic supporting-character and this shift in perspective creates such a great opportunity for new and old viewers to learn the backstory of this beloved ruler.

The Tudum’s sneak peak reveals both the center actors and the characters’ meet cute displaying what may be a new approach to the Bridgerton world. Most people were drawn to ‘Bridgerton’s’ use of bold colors and pastel palettes, but this time the characters were found in slightly more tame fashions.

As usual, the aesthetics of the set and costume design continue to be outstanding, adapting an elegant style, but even more excitingly the leading lady is, once again, a woman of color. India Ria Amarteifio, who plays the young Queen, is a fairly novice actress aged 21. Although this role will be her first main casting in a distinguished show, the trailer shows that watcher’s can maintain some expectations of a good performance.

The show is planned to premiere on the streaming site sometime in 2023. - Erell Williams
