Around the Premier League: Matchweek 9

Story posted October 5, 2022 in CommRadio, Sports by Ben Palillo

With the passing of Queen Elizabeth II and the international break for the UEFA Nations League, the Premier League has not had a regular season match since September 18. However, that ended on October 1 as regular season action returned.

Arsenal defeated Tottenham in the North London Derby, hat tricks for Erling Haaland and Phil Foden led Manchester City over Manchester United, and Wolverhampton fired manager Bruno Lage.

Let’s dive into these top storylines from soccer’s top league.

Arsenal Defeats Tottenham in the North London Derby

Arsenal continued their Premier League-leading start with a 3-1 victory over Tottenham.

Thomas Partey scored on a sensational strike from outside the box to put Arsenal up 1-0 in the 20th minute.

Harry Kane would knock in a penalty in the 31st minute to tie the game at one, but that was all the scoring Tottenham could manage.

Gabriel Jesus slotted one in the net in the 49th minute to give Arsenal the lead and Granit Xhaka scored the insurance marker in the 67th minute.

The game was not as close as the final score indicates. Arsenal dominated possession with a 65.7% total. Arsenal held Tottenham to three shots on target on seven attempts. Arsenal also attempted 22 shots.

Arsenal will look to stay atop of the table as they go against Liverpool on Sunday. While Tottenham will try to secure three points on Saturday against Brighton.

Haaland and Foden Score Hat Tricks in a 6-3 Victory Over Manchester United

The 187th rendition of the Manchester Derby was all Manchester City. Manchester City defeated Manchester United 6-3 at Etihad Stadium behind terrific performances by Erling Haaland and Phil Foden.

Haaland struck in the 34th, 37th and 64th minutes, leading to his third straight home hat trick. This magnificent performance brings his golden boot-leading total to 14 goals. Haaland is also the fastest player in Premier League history to record three hat tricks breaking the record by an absurd 48 games.

Foden scored in the 8th, 44th and 73rd minutes for his first senior career hat trick. This impressive display brought his goal total up to five on the season.

Antony scored in the 56th minute for Manchester United and Anthony Martial scored two goals late in the 84th and 90th+1 minutes, respectively, to make the final score more respectable.

Manchester City will hope to continue their winning ways against Southampton on Saturday. While Manchester United looks to bounce back against Everton on Sunday.

Bruno Lage Gets Sacked By Wolverhampton

Following a 2-0 defeat to West Ham on Saturday, Wolverhampton announced Sunday that they would dismiss Lage of his managerial duties ending his 15-month tenure with the club.

Wolverhampton has started the season in poor form with a  1-3-4 record for six points, with them sitting at 18th in the Premier League table. The offense has only three goals through their first eight games. In addition, Wolverhampton has only won two out of their last 16 Premier League matches.

Wolverhampton has yet to announce a replacement and will likely face Chelsea on Monday without a manager.
