UNIVERSITY PARK, PA-- The virtual reality world is still looking today for rules and conventions to follow in the future. The immersive format of virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality is just scratching the surface of where it needs to go.

In a packed foster auditorium on Monday night senior director of content production technologies at Viacom David Leopold spoke about his experiences in the immersive reality world. Leopold says everything is new in his profession such as the language, tools, strategies, skills and ways of thinking.

“And that language includes things like VR, AR, MR we have things like equirectangular, we have 360 we have 180,” Leopold said.

Since the immersive format is still in its infancy, Leopold reminds students that they are the future. Leopold says there is currently no secret to creating perfect virtual reality content. Aside from his work at Viacom, Leopold says it is his goal every day to research, develop, innovate and educate.

The Eberly professor of practice in the College of Communications Will Yurman says it is a great opportunity for Penn State students to hear from someone who has been in our position and has become successful.

“I hope it’s a way to inspire students and get them thinking about how to apply what they are learning here to the real world,” Yurman said.

Leopold says now is the time to test, fail. dream, play, learn and teach going forward in the search to figure out more. To learn more about immersive reality world visit viacom.com.
