Pennsylvania’s big issues in the midterm election
The 2022 Pennsylvania midterm election has several seats up for re-election. Centre County will be voting for a senator, governor, lieutenant-governor, representative in congress, and a representative in the general assembly.
The race between senator candidates Democrat John Fetterman and Republican Mehmet Oz could decide the majority party in the Senate. A recent poll conducted by Monmouth University shows favorable conditions for Fetterman’s victory.
At the state level, the victor of the governor race could revert laws on social issues like abortion, same-sex marriage and voting. Doug Mastriano is the republican candidate, running with Carrie Lewis DelRosso. Josh Shapiro is the democratic candidate and is running with Austin Davis.
The potential Democrat lieutenant-governor spoke at Penn State on Wednesday and stressed the importance of this election.
“This election is the most important election of our lifetime. If you care about our basic fundamental rights and our basic fundamental freedom, all of that is on the line here on November 8,” Davis said.
Randa Zammam is a first-year law student at Penn State and is an activist for voting. Her biggest concern for the election is the protection of basic rights.
“Never before have we been in an era where freedoms are being taken away, rights are being taken away. That’s what’s at stake in this election,” Zammam said.
