Why Penn State Students Relay for Life
UNIVERSITY PARK, PA - Penn State has held Relay For Life virtually for the past two years and finally made an exciting return to an in-person event April 9.
PSU Relay has been active since 2004. It has worked to raise over $1 million for the American Cancer Society with participants from all over the community, many of whom are students.
Oftentimes, participants find that cancer has found its way into their lives and want to put forth the effort to make a difference. Jessie Evans, sophomore and Entertainment Overall, shared that she has lived with friends and family who’ve had to deal with cancer.
She describes Relay For Life as an opportunity to fight alongside those who are battling cancer, as well as a chance to celebrate and remember them.
Although not everyone who volunteers is personally affected, all are motivated to win the fight. Brooke Donohue, junior and Donor Relations Overall, has been doing relay since her junior year of high school.
She explained that despite not being directly impacted by cancer, she has a lot of empathy for those surrounding her who are.
Penn State students who have put in the work for the Relay For Life cause find motivation in empowering the cancer survivors, patients and families and will continue to work towards their mission.
Julia Mertes, sophomore and Fundraising Overall, hopes that there will be a day that “the world will be without cancer” and is committed to “relaying until that day comes.”
