2022 Emmy Predictions

Story posted September 12, 2022 in CommRadio, Arts & Entertainment by CommRadio Arts & Entertainment Department

The 2022 Primetime Emmys are almost here, and like most comedy fans, I’m excited and terrified.

“Ted Lasso” is the show to beat, considering it won last year. The category's frontrunner has heartwarmingly earnest humor and phenomenal acting in its second season, making it the show to beat.

However, “Abbott Elementary” will give “Ted Lasso” a run for its money.

The ABC series emulates iconic sitcoms like “Parks and Recreation” but is still the most notable nominee.

“Barry” and “Only Murders in the Building” will also test “Ted Lasso.” Still, it’s more likely that fellow “SNL” alumni will challenge Jason Sudekis for lead actor in a comedy.

Bill Hader, Martin Short and Steve Martin are all in the way for Sudekis’s repeat win, with Hader having the best chance of beating his former castmate.

An underlooked category of Variety Talk Series could pull off the night's biggest upset as John Oliver has won the past six years.

Recently, Seth Meyers has been taking risks by breaking outdated late-night traditions and opting to play to his strengths, thus improving the show immensely.

Despite its immense popularity, I have a hard time believing that “Ted Lasso” will take home as many Emmys as it did during the 2021 Emmy Awards. The famous Apple TV+ comedy is up against many new shows, as well as some older shows making a comeback with popular new seasons.

“Ted Lasso” has a decent chance to win an award for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series. Still, I believe the majority of comedy awards will be given to “Only Murders in the Building,” “Abbot Elementary,” or “Barry.”

In the drama category, I would be shocked if “Yellowjackets” did not, at the very least, bring home awards for acting.

Although “Yellowjackets” is not as popular as its competitors, all aspects of the show are spectacular and deserve recognition, particularly Christina Ricci’s role as Misty.

Aside from “Yellowjackets,” It’s likely that we will be seeing either Jason Bateman (“Ozark”) or Bob Odenkirk (“Better Call Saul”)  win for Outstanding Lead Actor. - Rachel Newnam

The Emmys are right around the corner, and everyone is buzzing to find out who will win this year.

There are so many categories but one of the most competitive every year tends to be Lead Actress and Drama.

This year there are six nominations for this category and it is neck and neck. Zendaya is deservingly up for this category yet again for her lead as “Rue” in the series “Euphoria.”

Two years ago, Zendaya made history by becoming the youngest-ever winner of this category for season one. Now for season two, she is nominated again after absolutely crushing her acting in this season.

“Euphoria” came out less than a year ago with its new season and was huge in the media. Through social media, Zendaya received so much attention, leading her fans to watch “Euphoria”: not only for the content, however, to support her.

Only time will tell, but Zendaya has an amazing shot to take this Emmy home. - Olivia Anderson

Six high-rated prime-time shows have been nominated to win an Emmy for 2022.

"The Amazing Race" (CBS), "Lizzo's Watch Out for the Big Grrrls" (Prime Video), "Nailed It!" (Netflix), "RuPaul's Drag Race (VH1), "Top Chef" (Bravo) and "The Voice" (NBC) all have been nominated: however, there can only be one winner.

If there is one thing that people like to do when they are bored, it's listening to music.

Not only did "The Voice" (NBC) have an advantage by having four high-profile pop stars. However, when the show ends, there is a fantastic album drop.

Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson, John Legend and Ariana Grande came into season 21 strong and ready.

Not only is this show meant to have a winner of "The Voice" (NBC), but also a winning coach for the show.

As Shelton has a history of making singers famous, Clarkson stole the show this year. All four celebrities competed encouragingly and performed with their team to show off various of their vocal talents.

Clarkson did a fabulous job this year because the winner was not a typical winner like in years past.

Fans are looking forward to season 22 and hoping to find some great new soundtracks. "The Voice" (NBC) is well deserving of this Emmy, so fans are waiting to see what will happen. - Alexa Spilotras

The 74th annual Emmy awards are one of the most absolutely stacked awards shows of the last couple of years, which means it’s about to be a bloodbath.

Last year, “Ted Lasso” swept the awards, being nominated for 20 awards and winning 7, and I think the same thing may happen again this year. At the very least, I think Jason Sudeikis will likely win the award for Best Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.

Another thing I’d love to see is “Abbott Elementary” getting some recognition. Many people say this show is leading the charge to bring about a comeback for television sitcoms, and winning some awards would be a great way to kick off season 2 a week later.

Outside of comedy, the drama category is equally stacked. “Squid Games” and “Succession” are likely to dominate the drama categories, but I think we could very likely see a repeat of Zendaya's historic win in 2020 for Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her leading role in “Euphoria.” - Izzy Charboneau.
