2022 Heisman Watch: Week 5

Story posted October 5, 2022 in CommRadio, Sports by Micheal Bolger

Another week of college football has come and gone, with players rising in the Heisman talks while others fall. Here’s a look at who’s in the conversation:

C.J. Stroud and Caleb Williams

C.J. Stroud threw for 1,376 yards passing with 18 touchdowns and a passing rating of 93.7. Stroud has kept his team in the top three teams in all of college football after a 49-10 victory over Rutgers.

The former Oklahoma Sooner Caleb Williams has pushed his team to be the seventh-best team in the country. Williams bounced back this week after struggling against No. 12 Oregon last week, throwing for 348 yards and three touchdowns in the No. 6 USC Trojans' 42-25 win over Arizona State.

Stroud and Williams are the favorites as of right now while keeping their teams in the playoff mix.

Bryce Young

That’s right, the reigning Heisman gets his section this week after suffering a shoulder injury early in the second quarter against Arkansas.

No. 1 Alabama's quarterback Byrce Young gave his team an early 14-0 lead with two total touchdowns and 173 yards passing. After his injury, Arkansas would nearly come back to win the game but would fall short.

Young is listed as day-to-day and is questionable for this week's game against Texas A&M.

Hendon Hooker

Hendon Hooker threw for 349 yards and two touchdowns while also running for 112 yards and a touchdown. This dominant performance led his team to beat the previous No. 20 Florida 38-33.

Hooker continues to inch closer and closer each week to be the favorite for the Heisman Trophy. Hooker and No. 8 Tennessee will have to travel to No. 25 LSU, which may be one of their biggest tests of the year.

Blake Corum

The 5’8”, 210 lbs running back has helped carry Michigan to being a top-five team in all of college football. With only 93 attempts, Blake Corum has run it for 611 yards and 10 touchdowns on the season.

Michigan has two ranked teams left on their schedule and could end the season with one loss, giving Corum a chance at the Heisman.

Jahmyr Gibbs

After Byrce Young went down, Jahmyr Gibbs was given the ball to help the offense score. Gibbs ran it a total of 18 times for 206 yards and two touchdowns in Alabamas’ 49-26 win over Arkansas.

With Byrce Young questionable for this week's game against Texas A&M, Gibbs should see a lot more reps come his way.

Jalon Daniels

Jalon Daniels did not have his best game in No. 19 Kansas' 14-11 win against Iowa State. Daniels had a combined 102 yards and one rushing touchdown.

Daniels remains one of the biggest dark horses to win the Heisman after leading his team to a 5-0 start. Daniels has given Kansas' football program life and has led them to be a top-20 ranked team in the nation.

Daniels will look to bounce back this week against their biggest test yet in No. 17 TCU.
