Around the Big 12: Week 3
Week 3 in College Football has wrapped up and it provided nothing short of an exciting Saturday of football.
Within the Big 12, there was a combination of blowout games and nail-biting finishes between in-conference rivals and out of conference opponents.
Oklahoma is currently the highest ranked team in the conference as they were No. 3 in the rankings headed into Saturday. They took on the Cornhuskers of Nebraska seeking to continue their undefeated season.
Spencer Rattler led the team in passing with 24 completions for 214 yards and one touchdown. Eric Gray led the Sooners in rushing with 15 carries for 84 yards. The Sooners were able to continue their undefeated season as they defeated the Cornhuskers 23-16. Unfortunately for Oklahoma, this was not a large enough victory to keep them at No. 3 and dropped down a spot to be No. 4 overall in the AP rankings.
The only other team in the division that is ranked, Iowa State, took on the University of Las Vegas on Saturday night in Las Vegas. Iowa State quarterback Brock Purdy had an impressive game as he completed 21 passes for 288 yards and had three touchdowns.
Breece Hall led the team in rushing with 21 carries for 100 yards and two touchdowns. ISU was able to hold UNLV to 130 yards of total offense in a dominant showing. The Cyclones blew out the Rebels 48-3 and were able to keep their No. 14 ranking.
Unranked West Virginia traveled across state lines to Blacksburg, Va. To take on the No. 15 Virginia Tech Hokies on Saturday. This border rivalry didn’t disappoint as both teams put up impressive stats.
Jarret Doege led the Mountaineers in passing as he completed 15 passes for 193 yards and two touchdowns. Leddie Brown also had a respectable game, carrying the ball 19 times for 161 yards and two touchdowns. The Mountaineers were able to stave off a possible comeback from the Hokies and won, 27-21.
Oklahoma State traveled to Boise, Idaho on Saturday night to take on Boise State. Oklahoma State was looking to keep its undefeated record as they went into the contest, while the Broncos looked to improve their record from 1-1.
The passing attack from the Cowboys is less than impressive, to put it lightly. Quarterback Spencer Sanders led the dismal passing attack, completing only six passes for 82 yards and had one rushing touchdown.
On the other hand, Jaylen Warren had a huge game at running back and accounted for most of the Cowboy’s offense. Warren had 32 carries for 218 yards and two touchdowns. Oklahoma State was barely able to hang on as the Cowboys narrowly defeated the Broncos, 21-20 to stay undefeated.
Next week in the Big 12 will feature an instate rivalry as Texas Tech takes on Texas in Austin, Texas. This game, as well as all other games in the conference, surely won’t disappoint and football fans have a lot to look forward to this weekend.
