Around the Premier League: Matchweek 15

Story posted November 10, 2022 in CommRadio, Sports by Ben Palillo

This past weekend was another action-packed affair for the Premier League.

Haaland’s last-minute penalty wins it for Manchester City, Liverpool gets back on track with a win over Tottenham and Arsenal defeats Chelsea to stay atop the table.

Let’s dive into these top storylines from soccer’s top league.

Haaland’s last-minute penalty wins it for Manchester City

Manchester City thought they had three easy points as a middle-of-the-pack Fulham squad came to Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

Manchester City got off to a great start spending a lot of time in the offensive end and peppering Bernd Leno with shots.

Then in the 16th minute, Manchester City got on the board. Ilkay Gündogan made a beautiful through pass to Julián Álvarez, who struck a screamer past Leno for the early lead.

Manchester City continued to dominate before a challenge in the box from João Cancelo in the 26th minute got him sent off, and a penalty was awarded to Fulham.

Andreas Pereira slotted it in for the equalizer, and it looked like it was Fulham's game for the taking.

Despite being down a man, Manchester City kept up the offensive pressure. In the 76th minute, Haaland headed a shot past Leno, but VAR determined Haaland was offside.

Just as it looked like each team would walk away with a point, Kevin De Bruyne drew a penalty.
Haaland stepped to the spot in the 95th minute and slipped it past Leno for the 2-1 win.

Manchester City will look to extend their winning streak to four games when they face Brentford on Saturday. While Fulham will look to get back on track on Sunday against Manchester United.

Liverpool gets back on track with a win over Tottenham

After back-to-back losses to Nottingham Forest and Leeds United, Liverpool looked to get their season back on track against a Tottenham squad fighting to keep pace with Manchester City and Arsenal.

Mohamed Salah opened the scoring for Liverpool in the 11th minute after his shot from inside the box froze Hugo Lloris.

Salah doubled Liverpool's advantage in the 40th minute after Eric Dier misplayed a long ball from Alisson, leaving Salah one-on-one with Lloris, who chipped it past him for the goal.

Dejan Kulusevski set up Harry Kane in the 70th minute to cut Tottenham's deficit to one, but that was all the offense the Hotspurs could muster as they fell 2-1.

Liverpool will look to parlay this momentum into a win against Southampton on Saturday. While Tottenham will look to get back into the win column against Leeds United on Saturday.

Arsenal defeats Chelsea to stay atop the table

Coming off a 4-1 loss to Brighton, Chelsea looked to get back on track as they welcomed Arsenal to Stamford Bridge.

Both teams had plenty of offensive chances, but only one found the back of the net.

In the 63rd minute, Bukayo Saka swung a corner into the box, and it trickled past everyone right onto the foot of Gabriel Magalhães, who tapped it in, giving the Gunners a 1-0 lead that they would never surrender.

There was some late action, but it was different from what many expected. In the 91st minute, Granit Xhaka was dribbling out the clock in the corner then  Trevoh Chalobah shoved him out of bounds. Xhaka took expectation to this, and tempers flared as the teams came together.

This late-game flare-up has Premier League fans excited for the April rematch.

Arsenal will look to stay atop the table as they face Wolverhampton on Saturday. While Chelsea will look to end their recent skid against Newcastle on Saturday.
