Around the SEC: Week 14 (Football)
While it looks like we already have both division winners in the SEC, there are still a few teams with the potential to shake things up during these last couple of weeks of the season.
There was also some history made in Vanderbilt despite the score being as lopsided as it was.
Senior soccer player Sarah Fuller made history on Saturday as she became the first woman to play in a Power 5 football game during Vanderbilt’s 41-0 loss to Missouri. Fuller kicked off to start the second half of the game in what was a 30 yard squib kick which was not returned.
It was announced that Fuller will remain on the roster as Vanderbilt travels to take on Georgia. Despite the historic event, Vanderbilt is the only team in the SEC without a win at 0-8 this season, and it was announced after the game that the school fired head coach Derek Mason after going 27-55 in seven seasons.
Looking at the rest of the conference, the Iron Bowl didn’t live up to the hype this season as Alabama destroyed Auburn without head coach Nick Saban winning 42-13.
Mac Jones continues his potential Heisman campaign, passing for over 300 yards and five touchdowns. Alabama remains as the best team in the country right now as the Crimson Tide have one game remaining in the regular season, and it’s a revenge match against LSU.
Florida looks destined to join Alabama in the SEC Championship game as the Gators dominated Kentucky winning 34-10. The story in this game was the Florida defense, as it only allowed 62 passing yards in the entire game and picked off quarterback Terry Wilson twice.
The Gators have two games left on their schedule, both against bottom SEC teams and still sit in sixth place in the polls.
The next closest teams appear to be Texas A&M and Georgia, although both have a near impossible road to the championship game.
Texas A&M has no shot to catch Alabama at this point, as when the two teams played each other back in Week 2 the Crimson Tide destroyed the Aggies 52-24. That was the Aggies’ only loss all year, as even though they upset Florida, there’s no shot for the Aggies as they just have one game left against Auburn.
Georgia’s road appears to be dead in the same way that Texas A&M’s road is. Despite being ranked at No. 8 in the polls, the Bulldogs lost earlier in the season to Florida 44-28. Georgia only has one game left in the season against previously mentioned Vanderbilt.
