Champions League: Week 2

Story posted October 4, 2021 in CommRadio, Sports by Maclain Young

It was another crazy week of Champions League groups stage action as many sides pronounced themselves as competition favorites and underdogs put themselves on the map.

Beginning with Group A, in a massive match between juggernauts Manchester City and PSG, Lionel Messi finally got on the board for his new club. PSG collected a massive three points putting them atop the group.

RB Leipzig, on the other hand, continued to struggle, having conceded eight goals in its first two Champions League matches. Leipzig has zero points and sits at the bottom of Group A.

In Group B, or this Champions League’s “group of death,” Liverpool solidified itself as the top team. Liverpool thrashed FC Porto in Portugal by a final score of 5-1.

Mohamed Salah continued his top form securing a brace in the contest.

Elsewhere in the group, Atletico Madrid found its footing with a 2-1 victory over Milan at home.

Group C saw two major clubs continue to dominate. Borussia Dortmund handled Sporting CP 2-1 and Ajax did the same with a 2-0 win over Besiktas.

The largest shock of the week’s matches was FC Sheriff taking down Real Madrid by a score of 2-1. Sheriff’s Sebastian Thill was the hero with a match winner in the 90’.

Sheriff has won both of its matches in the competition so far and is currently at the top of Group D.

The story of Group E and possibly the biggest storyline in the Champions League so far has been the struggle of FC Barcelona. The Spanish side has been spiraling since the departure of Messi and has not scored a goal in two Champions League matches so far.

Bayern Munich on the other hand has dominated in both its matches, outscoring opponents 8-0. Bayern is currently at the top of Group E.

One of the more competitive groups so far has been Group F. After being shocked by Young Boys in the previous week of Champions League play, Manchester United got back on its feet with a solid 2-1 victory at Villarreal.

Despite the return to form for Manchester United, Italian side Atalanta holds a narrow lead in the group standings.
Another group that has been extremely competitive thus far has been Group G. Austrian side RB Salzburg is currently leading the group with just four points.

Surprisingly, usually strong Lille has struggled so far with zero victories in the first two matches. The French side recently lost a tough match 2-1 in Red Bull Arena in Austria.

Finally, in Group H an Italian squad made a statement over one of England’s strongest. Juventus picked up a huge win at home against English giant Chelsea.

The Blues dominated possession in Italy and outshot Juventus but could not overcome a goal coming early in the second half.

Juventus now stands atop Group H alone after winning its first two matches.

The Champions League will take about a month’s break for an upcoming international break, but many fans will certainly be anticipating their favorite team’s return to action to see how the rest of the group stage play will turn out.
