The CommRadio Weekly Playlist – Here members of the Arts and Entertainment Department will talk about the songs that dominated their playlists during the week and what makes them so good.
“Don’t Throw Out My Legos” - AJR
Senior year of high school, I used to listen to “Don’t Throw Out My Legos” once a day, but I stopped once I got here. Recently I re-listened to the song and I felt the emotions I had back then.
I had feelings of being nervous while preparing for my next chapter in life, yet at the same time, I wasn’t ready to move on. There were feelings of wanting to continue being a kid.
This song perfectly encompasses that very specific feeling of not ready to move on. I feel like it resonates with a lot of college freshmen who still might be missing the past, yet excited for their future.
The instrumentals, soft tune and exciting rhythm all mixing gives the song a unique tone. The artist's voice is one filled with passion and emotion.
So, for anyone looking for the feelings of moving into adulthood while still holding onto their youth should listen to this underrated AJR song. - Ethan Hetrick
“I Feel Good” - Pitbull Ft. Anthony Watts & DJWS
Pitbull is known for creating uplifting music that makes you want to dance at any moment of the day. His latest song, “I Feel Good” is no exception.
As of recent years, Pitbull has not released new music as consistently as he did before, but when he does, he does not fail to impress. Something about Pitbull’s latest track instantly changes my mood.
Even though it is very true to Pitbull’s style, the collaboration with Anthony Watt’s and DJWS gives it a unique flair. The uplifting beat, catchy lyrics and Watts’ amazing vocals have made it this week’s go-to song.
“I Feel Good” has a classic EDM beat very true to the Miami club vibe. If you are looking for a catchy beat and contagious rhythm, “I Feel Good” is a great choice. - Camila Rodríguez
“THAT’S WHAT I WANT”- Lil Nas X
Lil Nas X is best known as a rap artist but his recent album “MONTERO” shows that he is capable of branching out of the genre and doing so successfully.
While “INDUSTRY BABY” and “MONTERO (Call me by your name)” are the big hits off Lil Nas X’s album “THAT’S WHAT I WANT” is a true standout.
It features Lil Nas X with a guitar backing while the artist prominently known for rapping sings about finding someone to love. His vocal performance is very impressive and the lyricism on the song makes this an overall heartwarming listen.
I find myself going to put on this song every time I plug in my headphones and have to fight the urge to start dancing once the song gets going. It’s an extremely fun song to listen to in any setting and hasn’t gotten old despite listening to it on repeat.
Lil Nas X had rock influences while making this song but it still fits well into his catalog making “THAT’S WHAT I WANT” one of my favorite songs that has come out this year. - Sophia D’Ovidio
“Pluto Projector” - Rex Orange County
During midterms week, I found “Pluto Projector” to be the perfect song for breaks between study sessions and exams.
This song appears on Rex Country’s third studio album, ‘Pony,’ which was released in 2019.
The arrangement of this song features the gradual layering of a variety of instruments joined by a powerful bass.
A part that I anticipate with every playback of this song, is the orchestral arrangement that begins at the three-minute mark. The blend of the guitar and violin, which are later joined by the bass, creates a very heart-warming feel to the song.
I especially enjoy listening to the slowed-reverb version that can only be found on YouTube. Slowing the tempo down emphasizes the beauty of all components of this song.
Even if you are not particularly into ballads, the musicality of ‘Pluto Projector’ can be appreciated by virtually all music fanatics. - Abby Chachoute
“Diamonds” - The Boxer Rebellion
This song is one of the few that transmits instant nostalgia every time I listen to it, from the short guitar intro and the strong percussion, to the opening gloomy lyrics: “Pretty little thing, did you feel something, did you always want me to be something.”
The melodies and spindly guitars, alongside the wispy voice of the lead singer, Nathan Nicholson, makes this song seem like a melancholic adventure.
With lyrics as sad as feeling like you are losing yourself and don’t deserve to be surrounded by good people, comparing yourself with coal and them with diamonds, this song has it all.
As the chorus says: “I’m no good next to Diamonds, when I’m too close to start to fade.”
This indie rock song has been one of my favorites for years now, due to its dark but enjoyable lyrics and sounds, and has now become my most important song this week. - Fernanda Lopez
