Heisman Watch: Week 7

Story posted October 20, 2021 in CommRadio, Sports by Logan Bourandas

Another week of college football is in the books and the race for the Heisman Trophy continues to be as open as ever.

Let’s take a look at some of the top contenders for the award after week seven of the college football season.

Bryce Young, QB, Alabama

In a battle with Matt Corral of Ole Miss for the favorite to win the trophy, Young had a great game to help out his case in last week’s game against Mississippi State.

Young threw for 348 yards and four touchdowns in a 49-9 win over the Bulldogs on Saturday.

For the first time in three games, Young didn’t turn the ball over as he didn’t throw any interceptions in last week’s win.

The Crimson Tide quarterback has shined all season long and ranks inside the top-10 in passing yards and quarterback rating while also ranking third with 24 touchdowns this season.

Bijan Robinson, RB, Texas

Despite yet another Longhorns loss, Robinson has shot up the Heisman rankings these past few weeks with consecutive great performances.

During last week’s game against Oklahoma State, Robinson rushed for 135 yards and two touchdowns as he ran for 6.4 yards per carry.

Including that game, Robinson has managed to rush for over 100 yards or more in all but one game this season.

The sophomore running back has rushed for 924 yards and 10 touchdowns so far this season.

Kenny Pickett, QB, Pitt

Yes, there is an actual chance this could happen.

Pickett has been one of the most efficient quarterbacks in college football this season, only throwing one interception all season long.

In last week's road win over Virginia Tech, Pickett had a quiet game for his standards as he threw for 203 yards and two touchdowns.

The senior quarterback has thrown for 1,934 yards and 21 touchdowns on the season thus far while leading the Panthers to a 5-1 record in a wide-open ACC conference.

David Bell, WR, Purdue

Let’s talk about a long shot.

Bell balled out on a national spotlight in last week’s upset win against No. 2 Iowa.

The junior receiver put up 240 receiving yards on 11 catches while reaching the end zone once. That statline came against one of the top defenses in the nation in the Iowa Hawkeyes.

For Bell, that Iowa game was the fourth 100 yard game of the season as the only time he didn’t hit that mark came against Notre Dame where he had 64 yards.

Bell has caught 38 passes for 679 yards with four touchdowns so far this season.
