NBA MVP Watch - Oct. 23

Story posted October 23, 2022 in CommRadio, Sports by Daniel Mader

The 2022-23 NBA season is underway, with all 30 teams playing in at least two games over the past week. It may be early in the year, but it is never too early to look at the MVP race. Last year, Nuggets center Nikola Jokić took home his second consecutive MVP trophy.

While possible voter fatigue says the Joker won’t win for the third straight year, these stars have made their mark in the first week.

Jayson Tatum, Boston Celtics

After a trip to the NBA Finals last season along with some drama surrounding the coaching staff in the offseason, Tatum and the Celtics have shown no interest in slowing down.

The sixth-year forward from Duke continues to grow his game, becoming more polished and efficient as a scorer while playing excellent perimeter defense. Tatum’s 34.7 points per game leads the league.

Wins over the 76ers, Heat and Magic this week have Boston at 3-0. If Tatum maintains his superstar play while leading Boston to the top of the Eastern Conference, watch out.

Ja Morant, Memphis Grizzlies

The closest thing you can get to a human highlight reel, Morant knows how to put on a show on a nightly basis.

Whether it’s the soaring dunks or blocks from behind, ridiculous finishes to avoid contact or a transition alley-oop, Morant plays with aggression. Through three games, he is averaging 34.3 points and 7.0 assists while shooting 57.1% from three.

Even if it isn’t this season, he seems destined to win an MVP award at some point in his career.

Brandon Ingram, New Orleans Pelicans

The Pelicans may have something special brewing. After putting up a fight against the Phoenix Suns in last year's playoffs, New Orleans got Zion Williamson back from his injury for this year.

At the forefront of their 2-0 start has been 2016 No. 2 pick Brandon Ingram. His current averages would all be career highs: 28.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 6.0 assists per game. He has not only blossomed into a fantastic shot creator but has improved his passing ability and all-around game.

The tandem of Williamson and Ingram is dangerous —both have been All-Stars, but in different years.  If the Pelicans stay hot, both young stars could be in the MVP conversation.

Giannis Antetokounmpo, Milwaukee Bucks

Same year, same Giannis.

The two-time MVP, former Finals MVP and DPOY looks as dominant as ever, collapsing defenses with his physicality and locking down entire offenses with his length.

What is even more terrifying is the continued improvement from the perimeter: Antetokounmpo is showing a willingness to take more jumpers and is shooting 3-6 from deep already. He is averaging 32.5 points, 12.5 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 1.5 blocks through two games.

Don’t be shocked if he makes some additions to his trophy case this season.
