NFL Game of the Week: Eagles vs. Steelers

Story posted October 7, 2020 in CommRadio, Sports by Austin Groft

This week’s game of the week features the battle of Pennsylvania, the Pittsburgh Steelers vs. the Philadelphia Eagles. The last time these two teams faced off, it was in 2016 and the Eagles won by a final score of 34-3.

The Steelers are coming off an unexpected early bye week with the postponement of their matchup against the Tennessee Titans due to COVID-19.

The Eagles lead the NFC East with a record of 1-2-1. Shocker, right? The other three teams in the division are sitting with an overall record of 1-3.

The Eagles got their first win of the season last week against the 49ers, 25-20.

Pittsburgh has been impressive all season with arguably the best defense in the league. The Steelers remain as one of six teams that are still undefeated. However, they may be presented with their first real challenge since the first three wins came from teams who have a combined record of 1-11.

Carson Wentz led the Eagles to their first victory of the season last Sunday. After receiving a lot of criticism, Wentz was able to gain some confidence and make enough plays en route to a big win. The Eagles defense also contributed, returning an interception for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

Pittsburgh’s defense is the key factor in this matchup. It currently ranks fifth in points allowed per game at 19.3. Most importantly, they rank first in rushing yards allowed per game at only 54. Their defensive line features notable players such as Cameron Heyward, Stephon Tuitt and T.J. Watt.

This is a huge advantage for Pittsburgh since Philadelphia's offensive line is facing many injuries. Isaac Seumalo and Jason Peters are currently on the injury reserve. The Eagles also saw a scare last week when Lane Johnson headed to the locker room during the game. He is currently questionable to play this week.

The Steelers will attack this injured offensive line looking to add more sacks to their total of 15 so far this season. That ranks second in the league, ironically behind the Eagles who are in first place with 17.

Teams all across the league are all being faced with injury problems. The Eagles, who have had plenty of injuries already, are hopeful that they will have Alshon Jeffrey and DeSean Jackson back in the lineup this week.

If the Eagles want to win this game, they’ll have to hope that Wentz will carry some of his momentum and confidence over from last week’s game.

On the other hand, Pittsburgh will look to rush the passer and frustrate Wentz. Offensively, the Steelers will continue to do what they have been doing - spreading the ball across the field and establishing the run game. Ben Roethlisberger will use his veteran leadership to propel the team to victory.

This game is probably going to be fairly low scoring considering it will be a defensive battle.

The Steelers are clear favorites since they are undefeated, coming off of rest and they are allowing 5,550 fans in the stadium for the game. Pittsburgh will take care of business against an injured Philadelphia team and will bring a win to their fans at Heinz Field.

Prediction: Steelers 24, Eagles 17
