Penn State Looks to Continue Unbeaten Streak Against Lindenwood

On Friday, Jan. 27th, and Saturday, Jan. 28th the No. 12 Penn State women’s hockey team takes on the Lindenwood Lions in a CHA matchup at Pegula Ice Arena. The Nittany Lions are currently in first place in the CHA with a record of 18-8-2 while Lindenwood sits in fourth place at 3-21-0.

The last time these two teams met was at Centene Community Ice Center in St. Charles, Missouri in October. The Nittany Lions swept that series with a 4-3 and 7-0 victory.

The Lindenwood Lions are coming off of a split series with the Syracuse Orange where they lost 4-1 and then had a bounceback win 6-3.

For the Penn State Nittany Lions, they played to their potential and completed a crucial series sweep of the Mercyhurst Lakers in Erie, Pennsylvania.

In the second game vs. the Lakers, Kiara Zanon recorded a three point night scoring the first goal of the game shorthanded, and assisting on Tessa Janecke’s late game tying goal and her game winning goal in overtime.

The Nittany Lions remain in first place and have taken a five point lead in the CHA.

After this tough fought trip to Mercyhurst, netminder Josie Bothun currently has a .916 save percentage and a 2.04 goals against average on the year.

Penn State is currently on a nine game unbeaten streak and do not look like they are slowing down anytime soon.

In Lindenwood’s 6-3 victory over Syracuse, sophomore forward Morgan Neitzke recorded a four point game with a hat-trick and one assist. Neitzke is on a five game point streak and will be looking to ruin a clean sheet for Bothun.

Lindenwood Lions goalie Julia Maguire took the start in game two against Syracuse and now has a 4.67 goals against average and a .889 save percentage for the season.

For this weekend's series, Penn State should dominate, especially on home ice. But, even with a fire power filled offense and great goalkeeping, the Nittany Lions cannot underestimate Lindenwood.

Morgan Neitzke definitely has the skill to make Penn State pay on the scoresheet if the Nittany Lions play a lackluster game of hockey.

The Penn State women’s hockey team needs to come out of the gates strong, and take these two games that they are projected to dominate in, to increase their lead on the rest of the CHA and remain in first place.

For Lindenwood, the Lions are going to have to move the puck with confidence to crash the net to throw Penn State off their strategy. Also, Lindenwood needs to prioritize staying out of the penalty box as they cannot afford to be a player down against the Nittany Lions.
