Penn State Opts Out of Bowl Game, Nittany Lions’ 2020 Season Is Over
Penn State athletics announced the football program is not participating in a bowl game this season, per athletic director Sandy Barbour and head coach James Franklin.
Athletics said in a statement the decision was made by football players and was “fully supported” by both Franklin and Barbour. Franklin said in his postgame press conference he would be meeting with captains and seniors to discuss what to do about a potential bowl game.
“Our student-athletes will now have the opportunity for a well-deserved break to enjoy time with their families before returning for the spring semester,” Barbour said in a statement.
Penn State was one of two Big Ten teams to play all nine of its football games this season. Franklin echoed Barbour’s appreciation for the sacrifices made by players, coaches and other personnel within the program all season long.
“I couldn’t be more proud and encouraged by how our team conducted itself during this unprecedented season,” Franklin said. “We are fully supportive of their decision, knowing it has been many months since our student-athletes have been able to spend time with their families and the challenges they endured, both physically and mentally.”
