Penn State has received some good news as it prepares for its upcoming Outback Bowl matchup against Arkansas.

Senior quarterback Sean Clifford announced on Friday that he will be returning for the 2022 season to use his final year of eligibility.

The signal caller announced the decision on his Twitter page with a three paragraph tweet where he stated “I could not pass up the chance to be with this family and play the game I love again.”

During the 2021 season, Clifford posted career highs with 2,912 passing yards and a 62.4 completion percentage.

Had Clifford not chosen to take his extra year of eligibility, the Nittany Lions would have likely had a battle at quarterback between current freshman quarterback Christian Veilleux and incoming 5-star prospect Drew Allar.

Clifford has been the starting quarterback for the blue and white since the start of the 2019 season and has played a total of 37 games during his college career.

The Cincinnati native will have a chance to make history next season as he currently sits in third place in Penn State history with 7,644 passing yards which is just 2,255 yards back of the all-time leader Trace McSorley.
