Penn State celebrated its 11th annual Military appreciation week from Nov. 4 to Nov. 11 along with a recognition for veterans at the football game on Saturday, Nov. 12.  Activities were ongoing throughout the entire week to honor those who served from our Penn State and local community.

Most events were open to the public and free. Events included a concert, open house, a 5K, exhibits at the All-Sports Museum, a breakfast, a ceremony, and concluded with a tailgate and recognition at Saturday’s football game.

The concert featured Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears as well as Cedric Burnside. Tickets for the concert happening at the State Theatre were available to purchase for $40 in advance on the website or $46 at the door. All proceeds went to the Penn State Military Student Fund.

The open house took place at the Omega Delta Sigma fraternity house. This house is home to the student veterans. On Nov. 6 there was a 5K organized by the Penn State Air Force ROTC. The Freedom 5K took place at Lubrano Park and raised money for veterans. The race itself was free however donations were appreciated.

Another event, “I Am a Penn Stater: Nittany Lions in World War II,” is being hosted by the All-Sports Museum and will be on display until June 1, 2025. This exhibition follows the Nittany Lion varsity letterman and Women’s Recreation Association athletes' contributions to WWII along with their success afterwards.

There was a ceremony on Friday, Nov. 11 at 11:11 a.m. to honor those who served. The ceremony was originally planned to take place on Old Main lawn however due to weather it was moved to Alumni Hall in the HUB-Robeson Center. There was a virtual option to stream as well. The ceremony featured guest speaker Rear Adm. Stephen Tedford who is currently the Program Executive Officer for Unmanned Aviation and Strike Weapons. Tedford is also an alumnus of Penn State.

To conclude the week Penn State hosted its annual Military Appreciation Tailgate at the Bryce Jordan Center at 12:30 p.m. This free tailgate was partnered with Walmart, providing food, entertainment, and a resource fair.

Throughout Saturday’s football game in Beaver Stadium the University would honor all veterans as well as hosting individual veterans to center field. Most of the veterans recognized were alumni of Penn State. Along with honoring those who served attendees were also given the special opportunity to witness the swearing in of new military personnel.

Penn State’s Blue Band along with the Mighty Sound of Maryland joined together during halftime to form images honoring the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines.
