Penn State Sports Weekly Overview

The following is the Penn State sports overview for the week of September 23rd to the 29th, and features results from every active Penn State athletic team.

Women’s Volleyball:

The women’s volleyball team split its two Big Ten Conference games this week after falling to Michigan State 3-2 on the 27th and then coming back to beat Michigan 3-1 on the 28th. Senior Deja McClendon recorded a double-double in the win over Michigan after registering 15 kills and 13 digs. Penn State continues Big Ten play against Indiana in its next match on Thursday, Oct. 3.

Player of the Week: Senior Ariel Scott. The 6’4” senior had 18 kills against Michigan State and recorded another 15 in the win over Michigan.

Stat of the Week: 24. Penn State owns a 24-0 all-time home record against Michigan. 

Men’s Golf:

The men’s golf team completed the final round of the Windon Memorial Classic on Monday, Sept. 23, and finished tied for 13th at the event. Leading the way for Penn State was sophomore JD Dornes, who finished tied for 27th after shooting a 221 over the course of the tournament. Penn State heads to Tennessee for the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate its next time out. The tournament will last from Oct. 11th to the 13th.

Player of the Week: Sophomore JD Dornes. The Lancaster, Pa., native was the clubhouse leader for the Nittany Lions during the Windon Memorial Classic.

Stat of the Week: 10. Dornes moved up ten places from the first round to the final round to finished tied for 27th overall individually.

Women’s Golf:

The women’s golf team competed in the Nittany Lion Invitational from the 27th to the 29th. Penn State finished third overall after shooting an 887 over the three day tournament. Penn State will travel to Greenville, NC, for its next tournament as it will compete in the Pirate Intercollegiate on October 7th and 8th.

Player of the Week: Senior Ellen Ceresko. The Jefferson Township, Pa., native had a fourth place finish for Penn State.

Stat of the Week: 3. Penn State had three golfers finish in the top 10 on the individual leader board: Ceresko (4th), Christina Vosters (5th) and Catherine Herrera (10th).

Women’s Soccer:

The women’s soccer team won both of its games this week, beating Purdue 6-1 on Thursday, Sept. 26th and Indiana 4-1 on Sunday, Sept. 29th. Redshirt senior, Tani Costa, had a pair of goals this week for the Nittany Lions. Penn State continues Big Ten Conference play when it takes on Wisconsin on Friday, Oct. 4th.

Player of the Week: Redshirt junior Emily Hurd. The Sammamish, Wash. native had a goal and three assists for Penn State this week.

Stat of the Week: 1. Penn State held Purdue to just one shot in its 6-1 win over the Boilermakers.

Men’s Soccer:

The men’s soccer team won both of its games this week, defeating West Virginia 2-1 on Wednesday, Sept. 25th and 3-1 over Wisconsin on Sunday, Sept. 29th. The men’s soccer team has now won three games in a row and improves its record to 6-2-1. Penn State plays non-conference opponent Saint Francis on Wednesday, Oct. 2nd in its next game.

Player of the Week: Redshirt junior Jordan Tyler. The forward’s second half goal against West Virginia completed a comeback victory for Penn State.

Stat of the Week: 1. Wisconsin put a ball in its own net as Penn State got a gift goal in Sunday’s game.

Field Hockey:

The field hockey team won a pair of games this week as it beat Miami (OH) 2-1 on Saturday, Sept. 28th, and Indiana 4-0 on Sunday, Sept. 29th. Senior, Ashtin Klingler, had two goals in the win over Indiana. The Nittany Lions continue their Big Ten play when they face off with Northwestern on Saturday, Oct. 5th.

Player of the Week: Senior Ashtin Klingler. The Selinsgrove, Pa., native had three goals this week for Penn State.

Stat of the Week: 4. The Nittany Lions have now won four straight Big Ten openers.

Men’s Tennis:

The men’s tennis team competed in the Navy All Conference Tournament from Friday, Sept. 27th to Sunday, Sept. 29th while also competing in the ITA All American Tournament on the 28th and the 29th.
