Penn State Sports Weekly Overview

The following is the Penn State sports overview for the week of December 9th to December 15th, and features results from every active Penn State athletic team.

Men’s Basketball:

The men’s basketball team defeated Duquesne 68-59 on the 11th and lost its “Return to Rec” game against Princeton 81-79, in overtime on the 14th. Senior guard Tim Frazier logged 11 points and a career-high 13 assists in the win over Duquesne. Frazier and teammate DJ Newbill combined for 48 points in the loss to Princeton in the Nittany Lions’ return to Rec Hall. Penn State is off until the 22nd, when they host Mount St. Mary’s.

Player of the Week: Junior guard, DJ Newbill. The redshirt junior had 24 points in Penn State’s loss to Princeton.

Stat of the Week: Penn State returned to Rec Hall for its first game inside the venue since 1996.

Women’s Basketball:

The women’s basketball team lost to South Dakota State 83-79 on the 11th , and then defeated Texas A&M 66-58 on the 15th. Senior guard Dara Taylor had a career-high 19 points in the loss to the Jackrabiits. Senior guard Maggie Lucas had 20 points against SDSU, then 26 against Texas A&M, to move her into fourth place on the school’s all time career scoring list. Penn State is off until the 22nd, when they host Alcorn State.

Player of the Week: Senior forward, Ariel Edwards. The Elmont, NY, native had a team-best 24 points on 9-of-12 shooting against South Dakota State.

Stat of the Week: Penn State had three different players score at least 15 points in the loss to South Dakota State.

Women’s Volleyball:

The women’s volleyball team defeated Michigan State 3-1 on the 13th, and Stanford 3-2 on the 14th, to advance to the Final Four. Seniors Ariel Scott and Deja McClendon led the Penn State attack against Stanford, logging 22 and 21 kills, respectively. Penn State will face Washington in the national semifinal on the 19th.

Player of the Week: Senior, Deja McClendon. The Louisville, Ky., native was named the Lexington Regional Most Outstanding Player and logged 21 kills in the victory over the Cardinal.

Stat of the Week: The Lions have now won 23 consecutive matches after their win over Stanford.

Wrestling:

The wrestling team defeated Ohio State 31-6 in the Lions Big Ten Conference opener. Penn State true freshman Zain Retherford upset Ohio State’s No. 1 Logan Steiber to lead the way for the victors. Penn State heavyweight Ed Ruth won his match in his season debut. The Lions are off until the 21st, when they travel to Iowa City, to take on the Hawkeyes.
