UNIVERSITY PARK, PA --- Goalies headlined the Women’s hockey game between the Penn State Nittany Lions and the Mercyhurst Lakers on Saturday night at the Pegula Ice Arena.

The Nittany Lions squeaked out a 2-1 victory over the Lakers with all the scoring coming in the third period. Freshman Olivia Wallin scored two minutes into the third period before Amy Dobson doubled the advantage just minutes later.

Mercyhurst got their only goal with five minutes left, as Rachel Marmen took the puck coast to coast and beat Josie Bothun for the first time of the night.

The tides were almost shifted in favor of the Lakers when the Nittany Lions top defenseman was awarded a five minute major and was disqualified from the contest.

However, the Nittany Lions battled off a total of nine penalty minutes in the second period including the major on the back of Freshman goalie Josie Bothun.

Nittany Lions coach Jeff Kampersal couldn’t say enough about the importance of Bothun during those penalties after the game, “You want your goalie to be the best penalty killer and Josie was that tonight.”

“Stop puck” Bothun said when asked about her mentality and how she managed to stop 32 total shots on the night. During the five minute major Bothun had seven saves while the team blocked a total of eight other shots.

Ena Nystrøm was phenomenal in the other crease for the Lakers, as she had 32 saves of her own while facing 34.

The Nittany Lions increase their record to 7-1-1 while Mercyhurst falls to 3-3-1.

The two teams will meet again Sunday afternoon at Pegula at 2 O’clock.
