Another Nittany Lion is officially a pro, as defensive end Shaka Toney was selected in the seventh round by the Washington Football Team in 2021 NFL Draft in Cleveland.

The redshirt senior leaves Happy Valley with the fourth-highest number of sacks in Penn State history with 20.5. Toney came off the bench his first two seasons, but his four hits against the quarterback in a win against Indiana in his sophomore season tied a school single-game record. He posted 43 stops and nine sacks over his first two years as a reserve.

In his junior season in 2019, Toney saw himself in the starting lineup for the first time as he went on to start all 13 games. His 40 tackles, eight for a loss and 6.5 sacks were enough to get him second-team All-Big Ten honors.

He’s coming off a first-team All-Big Ten senior season with a team-leading five sacks, a forced fumble and a pass deflected. His 31 tackles was second-highest on the team among his position as only former teammate and fellow draftee Jayson Oweh recorded more.

The Philadelphia native will head to Washington and join head coach Ron Rivera to begin his NFL career.
