Fashion Column: From the Red Carpet to Your Closet

Story posted March 6, 2014 in CommRadio by Jane Moreland

The Oscars were this past Sunday. If you didn't have time in your busy schedule to watch the three-hour main event- the red carpet- then I'll fill you in on the fashion, along with ways to incorporate it into your spring wardrobe.

There were a lot of trends on the red carpet on Sunday.  The overlying themes for women were white and metallic dresses and statement necklaces.  Embellishments were extremely popular as well, shown as many small features evenly covering the entire dress.

White and pastel dresses were also very visible.  E! Network Host Guiliana Rancic wore a champagne Paolo Sebastian dress with a full skirt, and an embellished V-neck bodice.  The top section was so delicate, almost resembling a lace material.  One way to incorporate this look into your life is to find white, lacey blouses for spring.  This combined with a plunging neckline will be the perfect going-out piece to pair with a black leather skirt, shorts, or leggings. Other stars who rocked the light/white/pastel trend were Lupita Nyong'o, who wore a baby blue, deep V-neck, custom Prada gown. Kate Hudson rocked an ivory ensemble with silver beading, a deep V-neckline, and a cape of the same fabric.

Metallic dresses were everywhere on the red carpet.  The majority of the dresses had metallic embellishments of one kind or another.  Superstar Cate Blanchett wore a sleeveless, light pink, cap-sleeved dress with silver beading throughout.  Other celebrities that had metallic elements on their dresses were Anne Hathaway, Jennifer Garner, Angelina Jolie, Emma Watson and Jessica Biel.  To incorporate this look into your spring wardrobe, look for metallic accents in tanks and crop-tops.  Pair this with a flowy, neutral colored skater skirt and you're ready for a night out.  A "skater" skirt is a mid-thigh flared out skirt.  I consider black, white, champagne, gray, and navy to be the neutrals that would work best with this look.

The last trend I'm going to highlight is statement necklaces.  A lot of people have the idea that a statement necklace is a giant, sometimes gaudy, piece of jewelry...not the case.  The statement necklace is anything that draws attention to it outright.  Basically it's big enough to make a difference. Stars such as Jennifer Lawrence, Jessica Biel, and Charlize Theron all wore large diamond statement necklaces. Jennifer Lawrence wore a diamond chain that draped down her back.  I think this is an innovative way to draw attention to an open back ensemble.  Forever 21's layered chain necklace would be perfect to try this trend out for yourself.

A great website to see the red carpet fashion for yourself is www.dailymail.co.uk!  I hope you all enjoyed my suggestions, and I hope you ladies glam it up with white, metallic embellishments, and statement necklaces this spring!  After spring break I'll discuss new must-have shoes and where to find them on a budget.

Have a great break,
