Hobey Baker Watch: Week 2

Story posted October 26, 2017 in CommRadio, Sports by Josh Starr

The College hockey season is in full swing now and it is never too early to talk about potential Hobey Baker candidates. Here are my players to watch for this week:

Mason Jobst, F, Ohio State

In his sophomore season, Jobst led the Big Ten in scoring with 55 points, registering 19 goals and 36 assists. Jobst averaged a whopping 1.41 points per game last season on his way to earning First Team All-Big Ten and Second Team All-American honors.

This season, the newly minted captain started off right where he left off last year, scoring six points in as many games so far. In the season opener against Wisconsin, Jobst scored twice, including the game winner in the last two minutes of the game. Jobst added another two goals and a game winner to his ledger last Friday against Massachusetts.

He puts up a ton of points, but Jobst is more than just a scorer. So far this year, Jobst has a .591 winning percentage on 110 faceoffs. To have such a high faceoff winning percentage proves Jobst’s reliability in all three zones. Jobst will continue to produce points for the Buckeyes and keep his name in the Hobey Baker race.

Bobo Carpenter, F, Boston University

Last season as a sophomore, Carpenter tallied 32 points in 38 games. After just half a dozen games this year, Carpenter is on pace to eclipse that mark, already notching eight points thanks to an incredible series last weekend against Connecticut.

In the home and home series with Connecticut, Carpenter recorded six points. In the Friday night tie against the Huskies, Carpenter scored both of Boston’s goals. However, the real magic happened on Saturday in Connecticut when Carpenter netted his first career hat trick to go along with an assist in a 6-3 victory for the Terriers.

Carpenter seems to be building on his experience and is poised to have another great year. He is a dynamic power play threat which means he will have no shortage of opportunities to maintain his scoring pace. With one of the best names in hockey, Bobo Carpenter will definitely continue to put points on the board in Boston this year.

Tanner Jaillet, G, Denver

A year ago, Jaillet earned the Mike Richter award as the nation’s best goaltender after backstopping the Pioneers to a national championship. In his award-winning junior year, Jaillet finished with the most wins, 28, and the third best goals against average, 1.84, in the nation.

Before the start of his senior season, Jaillet was named to the Mike Richter Award watch list. On the ice, Jaillet has started three of Denver’s four contests. In those three starts, he has a 1-0-2 record with a .911 save percentage and a 2.21 goals against average. In his one win so far, Jaillet stopped 31 shots against Notre Dame and only let 2 pucks get by him. Jaillet’s record does not reflect his numbers and it will surely improve as the season rolls on.

Denver is once again in the running for the national championship and Jaillet will be an important piece for them to repeat. He will continue to get the bulk of the starts and without a doubt will be one of College Hockey’s top netminders once again.
