‘Cancer Cannot’ Campaign Kick Off: Hashtags for a Cause
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Things are heating up in the lead-up to THON weekend after the Cancer Cannot campaign kick-off on Monday. Music, cake and balloons decorated the HUB-Robeson Center staircase, raising awareness for World Cancer Day.
The goal of the event was to push students to be involved on THON weekend, coming up next week.
“We’re really trying to get people excited about our mission and our cause, and getting people really pumped up for THON weekend,” event coordinator and media relations lead Jennie Warek said.
With the help of the THON photography committee, students, staff and faculty showed what cancer cannot do through photos with statements on the palm of their hands.
Launched in 2016, the campaign encourages individuals to share their reason to find a cure for cancer on social media accompanied by the hashtag “cancercannot.” The event aims to shine a positive light on the disease, an opportunity to stand up for those fighting childhood cancer.
“They’re not letting it stop them, so we aren’t letting it stop us from fighting for them to raise money for research and for financial support for the families impacted by childhood cancer,” THON public relations committee member Danielle Blitzer said.
There are now less than 10 days until the annual 46-hour, no-sitting, no-sleeping dance marathon in the Bryce Jordan Center.
