Gridiron Girls: Episode Two

Audio/Story posted September 26, 2018 in CommRadio, Sports by Sports Staff

Football analysts Carolyn Sistrand and Ariel Simpson discuss week three of NFL play as Steph Naranjo hosts CommRadio’s first all-girl football podcast, Gridiron Girls:

It’s been a strange start for the NFL this season, as upsets shake up both conferences. Rookies are getting the nod to shine as starters while some teams favored in preseason predictions are now struggling at the beginning of their season.

The Browns finally picked up a win after a 635-day drought. Rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield stepped in after Tyrod Taylor left injured, setting the stage for their first win this season over the Jets and rookie quarterback Sam Darnold. Mayfield has already been named the Browns’ starter for their week four matchup against the Raiders.

Another rookie quarterback Josh Allen stunned last week as the now 1-2 Bills took down the Vikings 27-6. Allen looked more seasoned then Kirk Cousins, who, in his first season with Minnesota, is now 1-1-1. While most pinned the Vikings to win this matchup, some are now asking if Cousins can be the one that leads this Vikings team on another playoff run.

Jimmy Garoppolo tore his ACL in the 49ers matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs. What is the future of this San Francisco team without Garoppolo? Patrick Mahomes looks strong at the helm of this Kansas City offense but can that momentum continue and will the Chiefs make a major splash in the AFC this season?

Matt Patricia went up against his old team and out-dueled Bill Belichick in Detroit’s 26-10 win over the 1-2 New England Patriots. Brady threw for 133 yards and could not find receivers as the Lions defense double-teamed Gronkowski all night. Matthew Stafford threw for 262 yards and two touchdowns, looking like the more dominate quarterback compared to Brady. Running back Sony Michel was utilized in the backfield. However, it was not enough to penetrate the Detroit defense. Even with Julian Edelman on his way back from suspension, are the Patriots on the outs as the AFC powerhouse?
