UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Healthworks Equity Team hosted an outreach table to address mental health stigma among communities of color in the Intramural Building lobby on Wednesday.

Healthworks is a Peer Education Program through Student Affairs at Penn State. They host events every Wednesday in collaboration between Health Promotion and Wellness, Campus Recreation, and Centers for Fitness and Wellness. Peer Educator Claire Samolewicz said this week’s event was focused on minorities because of Black History Month.

“We’re hoping to promote different health resources we provide to students who happen to walk by for their workouts, and hopefully they’ll take away at least one resource from this and maybe incorporate it in their weekly routine,” Samolewicz said.

Besides a number of mental health resources, students also had the chance to write positive affirmations to lift up other students. Penn State junior, Joseph Vanacore said it was a motivational event.

“I love seeing this stuff around Penn State and being able to be a part of it,” Vanacore said. “I think it gets a really good message out there and writing my own message made me feel a lot better too.”

The Healthworks Equity Team will be passing out the affirmations written in the HUB on Feb 21.
