Heisman Watch: Week 3
Three weeks have come and gone in college football and no clear favorite has jumped out for the Heisman Trophy. While one name has made headlines on one of the top teams in the nation, it’s still anyone’s race at this point in the season.
Here are some names to look out for after the third week of play.
Bryce Young, QB, Alabama
If a winner was to be named today, Young would most likely take home the trophy.
The Crimson Tide went down to the wire last Saturday against another SEC powerhouse in Florida. Young balled out in the national spotlight, throwing for 233 yards and three touchdowns.
Most importantly, Young and the Crimson Tide came away with the 31-29 victory, making it Young’s second win against a ranked team this season after beating the Miami Hurricanes in the opening week.
The win adds to what has been an impressive start to Young’s college career as he already has 811 passing yards and 10 touchdowns in the first three games this season.
Matt Corral, QB, Ole Miss
When talking about potential challengers to take the Heisman home, Matt Corral has made a strong case for himself these first three games.
Like Young, Corral has led his team to three wins to open up the season and has taken care of the ball. What separates Corral from his competition however is he has had much better success on the ground.
Corral not only threw for 335 yards and three touchdowns in the Rebels' latest win against the Tulane Green Wave but also ran for 68 yards and four touchdowns. The Rebels won the game 61-21 on Saturday.
Overall, Corral has 997 passing yards and 14 total touchdowns this season. We’ll see how both Corral and the Rebels play as the schedule gets tougher and the first test will be against previously mentioned Bryce Young and the Crimson Tide.
Treveyon Henderson, RB, Ohio State
The Buckeyes may have found their guy at running back.
Henderson doubled his carries from a week ago as he went from 12 in the Buckeyes loss against Oregon to 24 against Tulsa.
With those 24 carries, Henderson caught the eyes of college football fans by rushing for 277 yards and three touchdowns. After a game like that, it’s hard to believe Henderson wouldn’t be the guy at running back moving forward.
Despite not starting until last Saturday, Henderson has scored a touchdown in each of the team’s previous two games which included a 70-yard receiving touchdown against Minnesota in the opening week.
Henderson may need a few more of those 200-yard rushing games to compete with the likes of Young and Corral but he made a name for himself this past Saturday.
Anthony Brown, QB, Oregon
While his stats don’t shine like the other three, Brown has already boosted his resume with a statement win and plays for one of the top teams in the country.
Brown has scored multiple touchdowns in all three games this season including the Ducks 35-28 win over Ohio State. In that game Brown led the way, throwing for 236 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 65 yards in the win.
In the Ducks 48-7 win over Stony Brook, Brown played his most efficient game of the season by completing 77.8% of his passes.
Brown currently has 567 passing yards and six total touchdowns on the season so he could have a chance at the trophy if he can light up the stat sheet during Pac-12 play.
