Hobey Baker Watch: Week 11

Story posted January 31, 2018 in CommRadio, Sports by Josh Starr

Every year, the Hobey Baker Award is presented to the top collegiate hockey player. Many times, that means the best offensive player wins the award. This week, I will gloss over college hockey’s top point producers so far this year.

Adam Gaudette, F, Northeastern

After scoring 52 points last season, Gaudette is on pace to have another 50 point season. He had 13 multi-point games and has added five games with three points or more.

On the year, Gaudette has 19 goals and 20 assists for 39 points. The highlight of his season came on January 6th versus Bentley. That night, he scored twice and assisted on two more goals.

Gaudette has scored in bunches all year long but has shown that he can be shut down. He has been held off of the scoresheet seven times this year. If he fails to produce down the stretch, he may fall out of consideration for the Hobey Baker.

Nick Halloran, F, Colorado College

With eight points in his last three games, Halloran seems to be hitting his stride just as the season’s crunch time approaches.

Tied with Gaudette for tops in the nation, Halloran has 39 points on 16 goals and 23 assists. He has multiple points in five of his last eight games and has provided a balanced attack during that time, scoring seven goals and eight assists during that stretch.

Halloran may have less of a chance to win the award because his team is ranked 25th in the Pairwise rankings and has just a .500 record, but it is hard to ignore his offensive production this year.

Dylan McLaughlin, F, Canisius

Like the other top scorers in the country, McLaughlin has been hot the last few weeks. In his last four games, he has eight points, bringing his season total to 38 on 14 goals and 28 assists.

McLaughlin has scored more consistently than others, scoring one or two points each night instead of three or four point games once a month. With that being said, he has shown flashes that he can have a big night here and there. On January 19th at RIT, McLaughlin had two goals and two assists.

McLaughlin may be in the same boat as Halloran as his team is likely to miss out on the NCAA tournament. However, McLaughlin has been a top performer all year long and should be in the race for the award.
