The northwest coast of Puerto Rico is one of the few places in the world where surfers can ride world class waves, look ashore and not see towering resorts. Developers were stymied by restrictions because the area was adjacent to an Air Force base. The military is gone and this undisturbed coastline has become a magnet for tourists from the island and beyond. Punta Borinquen was designated a World Surf Preserve last year. Environmentalists are working hard to extend the protection inland so tourists may continue to climb the coral and enjoy the natural beauty of the area.
