Mike the Mailman in another light
Mike Herr better known as Mike the Mailman is considered to be one of the most famous people at Penn State University. He’s been a part of the faculty or as he likes to call it, family, for almost 50 years. He comes from a small town in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania. Herr feels that he got the position as the mailman because of fate. He was away at school and completely hated it; he was always a free spirit. He called his parents up one day and told them he wasn’t interested anymore, got on his bike and rode back home. It was his dad that told him about the position at Penn State. He came up to State College, applied and the rest is history.
Mike is known for his upbeat spirit and endless jokes. When you walk into his post office most people know they’re in for an experience. Post offices aren’t known for having the friendliest environments. Mike takes pride in knowing that his office isn’t like the rest and graduates from all over the country can vouch for this.
Some of the quirks Mike is famous for are his memory of zip codes. He can say the zip code to any city, in any state, on the spot. Sometimes when students see him they shout out random cities just to see if he’ll get it, and he always does. Mike also has his cookie of the month contest that has been around for nearly 30 years. Contestants are allowed to come up with whatever cookie they’d like. As long as it tastes good and it isn’t chocolate. Mike figures no chocolate makes it a little more challenging.
When he’s not officiating tennis or organizing bar tours, you can find Mike at his home on the top of the hill gardening and enjoying the alpacas that are in the farm next door to his house.
He finds comfort in helping other people and listening to friends when they’re in need. His pride and joy are his wife Katie and their two children Michaela and Mary Kate. If you ask Mike what he wants to be remembered by, he’ll tell you he just wants to be remembered as someone who provided a little levity in his friend’s life.
Mikes family life
Mike's number one priority is his family. He almost missed out on the life he has now, but he attributes all his good fortune to fate. His wife Katie and two girls Michaela and Mary Kate are his passion. Mike can't imagine life without them.
