Penn State Sports Weekly Overview

The following is the Penn State sports overview for the week of October 7th to October 13th, and features results from every active Penn State athletic team.

Football:

The football team defeated Michigan 43-40 in four overtime periods on Saturday, to claim its first Big Ten win of the season. The four-overtime thriller was the longest game in Penn State history. Junior running back Bill Belton scored the winning touchdown on a two yard run. The Nittany Lions are off this coming week and will travel to Columbus, Ohio on the 26th when they take on Ohio State.

Player of the Week: Freshman, QB, Christian Hackenberg. The freshman signal caller threw for 305 yards and tallied three total touchdowns.

Stat of the Week: Michigan running back Fitzgerald Toussaint ran the ball 27 times for just 27 yards on Saturday.

Men’s Ice Hockey:

The men’s hockey team won its first game of the season, defeating Army 4-1 on the 11th inside the newly built Pegula Ice Arena. Nittany Lions’ redshirt junior defenseman Nate Jensen scored the first goal inside the new facility e. Penn State is off until the 18th when they take on Air Force for a two game series in Colorado Springs.

Player of the Week: Sophomore, goalie, Matthew Skoff. The McKees Rocks, Pa., native had 25 saves in the 4-1 win.

Stat of the Week: Penn State held Army to a 1 for 10 ratio on the power play.

Women’s Ice Hockey:

The women’s ice hockey team dropped both of its games to Quinnipiac this week, losing 5-1 on the 11th and 4-0 on the 12th. Sophomore Shannon Yoxheimer scored the lone goal for the Nittany Lions. Penn State is off until the 18th when it makes its home debut against Union.

Player of the Week: Sophomore, forward, Shannon Yoxheimer. The Jackson, Mich., native scored the lone goal for Penn State this week.

Stat of the Week: Senior goaltender Nicole Paniccia made 48 saves for Penn State in the 5-1 loss to Quinnipiac.

Women’s Volleyball:

The women’s volleyball team won both of its games this week, winning 3-2 against Minnesota on the 9th and Wisconsin 3-0 on the 12th. Seniors Ariel Scott, 25 kills, and Katie Slay, 16 kills, 10 blocks, led the way for Penn State against Minnesota. The Nittany Lions are off until the 18th when they take on Big Ten Rival Illinois.

Player of the Week: Senior, Ariel Scott. The All-American had a season-high 25 kills against Minnesota and a team-high 13 against Wisconsin.

Stat of the Week: Scott now has eight matches where she has registered at least ten kills.

Men’s Soccer:

The men’s soccer team beat Michigan 3-1 on the 11th to claim its eighth win of the season. Martin Seller, Grant Warming and Owen Griffith scored the goals for Penn State. The Nittany Lions are off until the 20th when they take on Michigan State.

Player of the Week: Junior, goalkeeper, Andrew Wolverton. The Atlanta native made three saves in the win over Michigan.

Stat of the Week: Penn State is 3-0 in the Big Ten following the win over Michigan.

Women’s Soccer:

The women’s soccer team lost to Michigan 1-0 on the 13th in its only game of the week. The Nittany Lions have now been shut out for two consecutive games. Penn State is off until the 17th when it takes on Ohio State.

Player of the Week: Redshirt sophomore, goalkeeper, Britt Eckerstrom. The Germantown, Md. native had two saves in the loss to Michigan.

Stat of the Week: Penn State dropped its first home game of the season in the loss to Michigan.

Field Hockey:

The field hockey team won both if its matches this week, beating Ohio State 6-1 on the 11th and Bucknell 2-0 on the 13th. Senior Brittany Gryzwacz scored a

pair of goals for the Nittany Lions in the 6-1 win over the Buckeyes. Penn State is off again until the 19th when it takes on Michigan State.

Player of the Week: Redshirt junior, goalkeeper, Kylie Licata. The Penn State goalkeeper collected her sixth shutout of the season against Bucknell.

Stat of the Week: Penn State’s six goals against Ohio State was a single-game high this season.

Men’s Golf:

The men’s golf team competed in the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate from the 11th to the 13th and finished in 13th place. The team shot a combined score of 911 during the three-day tournament. Sophomore JD Dornes led the Nittany Lions with a 220 total score that earned him a tie for 40th place individually. Penn State is off until the first round of the Georgetown Intercollegiate on the 21st.

Women’s Golf:

The women’s golf team competed in the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate on the 7th and 8th, finishing in sixth place after shooting a total score of 911 over the three-day tournament. Senior Ellen Ceresko with a 223 total score, finishing tied for eighth to lead the Nittany Lions. Penn State is off until the 19th when it competes in the Hoosier Fall Invitational.
