Penn State Sports Weekly Overview

The following is the Penn State sports overview for the week of October 14th to October 20th, and features results from every active Penn State athletic team.

Women’s Volleyball:

The women’s volleyball team won both of its matches this week, against Illinois on the 18th, by a score of 3-2 and 3-0 on the 20th, against Northwestern. Head coach Russ Rose moved into sole possession of second place on the all-time wins list with his 1,107th victory, in the win over Northwestern. Penn State is off until the 23rd when it takes on Ohio State.

Player of the Week: Senior Deja McClendon. The outside hitter had a team-high 14 kills in the win over Illinois.

Stat of the Week: The 3-0 win over Northwestern was Penn State’s 13th sweep victory this season.

Men’s Soccer

The men’s soccer team won its match 2-1 in double overtime against Michigan State on the 20th. Sophomore Drew Klingenberg scored the regulation goal for the Nittany Lions. Redshirt junior Jordan Tyler scored the game-winner for Penn State in double overtime. Penn State is off until the 27th when it takes on Northwestern.

Player of the Week: Redshirt junior Jordan Tyler. The junior striker scored the game-winning goal for Penn State in double overtime.

Stat of the Week: The game against Michigan State was Penn State’s third game this season that went into double overtime.

Women’s Soccer:

The women’s soccer team won a pair of games this past week, beating Ohio State 4-2 on the 17th, and Illinois 5-0 on the 20th. Senior Maya Hayes had a pair of goals against Ohio State, while sophomore Raquel Rodriguez had two goals against Illinois. Penn State is off until the 25th, when they take on Iowa.

Player of the Week: Senior Maya Hayes. The senior striker recorded her third multi-goal game of the year against the Buckeyes.

Stat of the Week: The 5-0 win over Illinois was the first Big Ten shutout of the year for Penn State.

Men’s Ice Hockey:

The men’s ice hockey team lost a pair of games to Air Force by a score of 5-2 on the 18th, and 3-1 on the 19th. Redshirt sophomore Eric Scheid and sophomore Luke Juha scored the goals for the Nittany Lions in the 5-2 loss. Penn State returns home against RIT for its next game on the 25th.

Player of the Week: Freshman Ricky DeRosa. The freshman forward scored the lone goal for Penn State in the 3-1 defeat, in his first collegiate game.

Stat of the Week: Air Force went 1-for-5 on the power play in the 5-2 win.

Women’s Ice Hockey:

The women’s ice hockey team split a pair of games against Union on the 18th and 19th, losing 2-1 on the 18th while winning the second game by the same 2-1 score. Sophomore Shannon Yoxheimer scored the lone goal for Penn State in the 2-1 loss. Freshman Laura Bowman scored the third period game-winning goal for the Nittany Lions in the 2-1 win. Penn State is off now until the 26th when they play New Hampshire.

Player of the Week: Freshman Laura Bowman. The freshman’s third period goal clinched the first Pegula Ice Arena win for Penn State.

Stat of the Week: 1,424 fans were on hand to witness the Penn State’s home opener.

Field Hockey:

The field hockey team defeated Michigan State 4-3 in a shootout on the 19th to remain undefeated in the Big Ten. Junior Taylor Herold notched a pair of goals for the Nittany Lions including the one that tied the match at 3-3 and force overtime. Penn State is off until the 25th when it takes on Iowa.

Player of the Week: Junior Taylor Herold. The Fredericksburg, Va. native had a pair of goals for Penn State in the win over Michigan State.

Stat of the Week: Penn State scored two goals in the final five minutes of regulation to force overtime.

Cross Country:

The cross country team competed in the Penn State National on the 18th with the women’s team grabbing a fourth place finish at the event. Leading the way for Penn State was freshman Julie Kocjancic who had a 22:21 time that gave her an 18th place finish. Only two members of the men’s team ran for Penn State in the national. The cross country team also competed in the Pre-National Invitational on the 19th, with the women’s team finishing in 13th place and the men finishing in 17th. Leading the way for Penn State were juniors Leigha Anderson and Matt Fischer, who finished in 43rd and 29th place in their respective races. Penn State is now off until the Big Ten Championships on November 3rd.

Men’s Swimming:

The men’s swimming team defeated West Virginia 153-129 in head coach Tim Murphy’s Penn State debut. Eight Penn State swimmers had the best time for their individual events. The Nittany Lions are off until November 2nd, when they face off with Buffalo.

Women’s Swimming:

The women’s swimming team defeated West Virginia 152-102 on the 19th. Sophomores Kaitlin Jones and Melissa Rodriguez each won two events to lead Penn State. The Nittany Lions are off until November 8th, when they compete against Virginia, West Virginia and Texas.

Women’s Golf:

The women’s golf team competed in the two-day Hoosier Fall Invitational on the 19th and 20th finishing in 6th place after shooting a total score of 928. Leading the way for Penn State was senior Christina Vosters who finished tied for eighth place after shooting a 227 for the tournament. Penn State is off until February 17th when it competes in the two-day Central District Invitational.

Women’s Tennis:

The women’s tennis team competed in the ITA Atlantic Regional from the 18th to the 20th, and the tournament continues until the 22nd. Penn State is off until November 7th when it competes in the National Indoor. However, those players competing in the National Indoor must qualify to compete.

Men’s Tennis:

The men’s tennis team competed in the ITA Atlantic Regional from the 17th to the 20th. The team is off until the 25th, when it competes in the three-day Big Ten Singles Championships.
