Penn State Students’ Thoughts on Last Weekend’s Weather

With temperatures dipping below zero, Penn State students were surprised about how frigid the weather was last weekend.

Just a day before the arctic weather hit State College, Penn State advised students, staff and faculty to dress appropriately and stay indoors when possible, however many students were caught off-guard by the intense cold.

Samiyah McDuffee (second-year, psychology) said that she was unprepared to encounter the bitter cold when she stepped out in the morning to head to class.

“I mean, it’s been cold in Penn State before, but this, I wasn’t ready for,” McDuffee said. “I wasn’t expecting it to be that cold that day, so I didn't have a hat on or a scarf.”

Although the cold is no stranger to students from states to northern neighboring states, these sub-zero temperatures were a new level of freezing.

Sadie Marine (second-year, psychology), who is originally from New York, said the single-digit weather was a first for her in Happy Valley.

“When I step outside the cold hits my face, I’m like ouch, but you get used to it I guess,” Marine said.

Despite the low temperatures, classes were not canceled university-wide, an action that was met with split reactions from students.

Considering the risks of hypothermia and frostbite, some students, including McDuffee, believed that classes should have been canceled on Friday.

On the other hand, Marine and other students found the conditions manageable, and did not think it was necessary for professors to do so.

After a bitter cold weekend, one thing for sure is that Penn Staters look forward to temperatures readjusting to their usual mid-20 lows and highs in the 50s.
