Penn State Women’s Hockey Suffers Overtime Loss to Lindenwood
Despite out shooting their opponent, the Penn State Nittany Lions (4-22-3, 1-13-1 CHA) fell in overtime 4-3 against Lindenwood (4-21-2, 4-10-1 CHA) in their second game of a two-game series.
“We had some good quality chances throughout the game,” said Hannah Hoenshell. “Obviously we didn’t bury those chances. Our goal is about 10-15 shots per period and we hit that, so hopefully eventually it will start working out for us.”
The first period got off to a slow start, until Amy Petersen gave Penn State an early lead, with her fourth goal of the season. Positioned behind the net, Hoenshell was able to wrap-around and find Petersen in the slot, giving her the opportunity for a one-timer past the glove of Lindenwood’s goalie, Nicole Hensley.
Lindenwood responded, as Alyssa West found Katie Erickson at the point for a slap shot during the power play. With time, Erickson placed the puck past Nittany Lions goalie, Nicole Paniccia, tying the score at one.
Lindenwood tacked on another goal with 50 seconds left in the first period on a breakaway goal by Jocelyn Slattery.
Early in the second period, a roughing penalty on Penn State’s Laura Bowman allowed Lindenwood to score off the powerplay within a few seconds. Lyndsay Kirkham took a shot from the point and it was deflected in at high slot assisted by Rachel Weich.
Throughout the remainder of the second period Lindenwood accumulated two penalties, one tripping penalty on Caitlyn Post and another hooking penalty on Katie Erickson. However, Penn State was unable to produce on either powerplay, and entered the third period down, 3-1.
Late in the third period that Penn State had an answer for Lindenwood. Hoenshell notched her second assist of the game, as she set up Laura Bowman for a point blank shot, narrowing the deficit to one, with 9:45 remaining. Following a timeout, the Nittany Lions tied up the game with just over a minute and thirty seconds left, from a slap shot off the stick of Jordin Pardoski.
“Honestly I thought it went wide, it was a good hard shot and I guess it hit off the other girl and went in, but that it was a good feeling to finally get one,” said Pardoski.
The game was sent into overtime, which ended when Lindenwood’s Kendra Board converted on a turnover, to end the game and sweep the series.
“We came back, we were down two goals and we came back in the third period and we didn’t get the win, so it’s always a little disappointing”, said Hoenshell. “The goalie [Hensley] was really good this weekend, robbing us a couple times”.
