Penn State Women’s Soccer vs. Indiana Game Summary

Story posted September 19, 2022 in CommRadio, Sports by Micheal Bolger

Penn State women's soccer tied against Indiana after a long, hard fought game on the road.

Both teams had good looks at the goal but could not capitalize, ending the game 0-0.

Penn State and Indiana opened up the game going back and forth, with the Nittany Lions leading shots with five to Indiana’s four. Keeper Katherine Asman and defender Cassie Hiatt worked together to keep out four of Indiana’s corner looks.

After halftime, Penn State came out looking for opportunities at the net and they got them. The Nittany Lions got three shots from three different players: Penelope Hocking, Jordan Canniff, Elle Kershner.

However, Indiana’s keeper would keep all of the attempts out of the net, giving her team a chance. The Indiana Hoosiers defense would adjust and keep Penn State's offense away from the net for a short while.

After 10 minutes of back and forth turnovers, the Nittany Lions got another shot at it. After an amazing shot by Hocking that hit the crossbar, Kerensher would get the best look of the night that would be kept out by Indiana’s defense.

Attacker Amelia White for Penn State would get the last shot at scoring a goal for the Nittany Lions, but Indiana’s defense had it covered. In the 87th minute of the game Indiana would get its only shot at scoring of the half, but Penn State kept it out to end the game with a tie.

Analysis:

Both team’s keepers played extremely well, and gave their defenses a chance to adjust to the opposing teams attack after saving opposing teams shots. Indiana keeper Jamie Gartenberg saved nine shots, and Penn State keeper Asman saved three shots.

Penn State's freshman forward Amelia White had a great showing with six shots, three that came in the first half while the rest came towards the end of the game. Four of her shots were on goal but all were saved by Indiana’s keeper Gartenberg.

Penn State’s offense had great pacing and attacks against Indiana’s back line, but they couldn’t finish at the net. The Nittany Lions had 15 total shots with eight shots on the goal compared to Indiana’s seven shots with three shots on the goal.

Substitutes off of Penn State's bench contributed a lot to the game. Kershner contributed four shots with one on goal, and Canniff contributed with one shot.

There’s some exciting news for the Nittany Lions, however, as freshman midfielder Olivia Smith made her debut in the second half of the game and held her own against Indiana.

The No. 8 Nittany Lions are now 5-1-2 on the season as they will return home to host the No. 4 Rutgers on Thursday at 7 p.m.
