Player Spotlight: Micah Parsons

Audio/Story posted October 11, 2019 in CommRadio, Sports by Danny Murray

In his first game back from his ejection in the 59-0 blowout at Maryland on Sept. 27, sophomore linebacker Micah Parsons picked up where he left off in the beginning of the 2019 season. The second-year defender totaled five tackles, two of which were for losses, along with one sack.

The biggest topic on campus this week is the letter that was sent to Parsons’ teammate Jonathon Sutherland. The letter was sent by a Penn State alumnus saying that his hair was a distraction to the team and that he should cut it. Parsons has this to say about the letter:

“People feel differently about it, it is what it is, people always want to have an opinion about someone,” Parsons said. “In the locker room, we’ve all been pretty tight together and if Jonathon’s going through it emotionally, we’ll carry him through it.”

Parsons has been a leader on the Nittany Lions defense and will look to have another big game this week as the undefeated Nittany Lions travel to take on Iowa Saturday night. Parsons’ sophomore campaign has been exactly what head coach James Franklin wants and needs in order for his team to make a run at the College Football Playoff.

Parsons has recorded 14 solo tackles in the first five games, his season high being seven against Pittsburgh in week three. Parsons looks to be on the same pace as last year, when he had 48 solo tackles.

This will be the first time Parsons will play Iowa on the road. Iowa, similar to Penn State, is known for their tough environment during night games especially.

“I’m hearing that Iowa is one of the best in the country, so I’m excited to experience it," Parsons said. "From what the guys said, from when they went out there, in a comeback victory they said it was nuts so I can’t wait to experience it.”

You can be sure to see Parsons all over the field Saturday as he and the rest of the Nittany Lions are determined to keep their record perfect.
