Around the Big 12: Week 4 (Football)

Story posted September 24, 2020 in

In contrast to the previous weeks, last week in the Big 12 was both quiet and unnoticeable.

Only one total game was played during the third week of the Big 12 season and it was a low scoring affair between Oklahoma State and Tulsa. While Oklahoma State is currently ranked high at No. 15, they only managed to beat Tulsa by nine points in a 16-7 win.

Recently, Oklahoma State was regarded as a potential college football playoff team by ESPN’s Desmond Howard who projected them to go all the way to the National Championship game.

This week, there are many more games to be played with a total of five on the slate.

Oklahoma, who moved up to No. 3 in the rankings this week will take on an 0-1 Kansas State team that lost a close game against Arkansas State a few weeks ago. Kansas State quarterback Skylar Thompson looked good in that contest throwing for 259 yards and two passing touchdowns. Oklahoma is favored by four touchdowns in this game.

A Texas rivalry will take place as the No. 9 Texas Longhorns take on the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Both teams are 1-0, however Texas Tech came close to losing in upset fashion against Houston Baptist a few weeks ago.

In a game where Houston Baptist’s Bailey Zappe threw for 567 yards and four touchdowns against the Red Raider defense, look for Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger to have a field day.

This game did lose some of its luster from the start of the season after Texas Tech’s first game as the Longhorns are favored by 18 points.

Oklahoma State will be looking to continue its winning ways as it takes on another undefeated team in West Virginia. The Mountaineers are coming off a 56-10 win against Eastern Kentucky.

Two Mountaineer running backs ran for over 100 yards in the game as Leddie Brown and Alec Sinkfield both reached the mark and recorded two touchdowns as well. This will be a great test for the Oklahoma State defense as they will have to prepare for teams like Texas and Oklahoma at the end of the season.

Perhaps the closest game on this week's schedule will be Iowa State taking on TCU. This is going to be the first game of TCU’s season while Iowa State currently sits at 0-1 after an upset loss against now ranked Louisiana.

In that game, the Cyclones only managed to put up 14 points and turned the ball over twice. Even after the loss, Iowa State is still projected to win this week by 2.5 points against TCU.
