It’s been a relatively quiet week in the league, but there’s still some news that happened around the NHL.

Hurricanes and Devils Clinch

Raleigh! You’re going back to the Stanley Cup Playoffs!

The Carolina Hurricanes clinched after the Florida Panthers lost to the Toronto Maple Leafs on March 23.

In New Jersey, the Devils clinched a in a 5-3 win over the Ottawa Senators at the Prudential Center.

Jack Hughes had a goal and an assist, and Nico Hischier had two assists in the game.

Mackenzie Blackwood also played his first game since Feb. 19 and made 25 saves.

The Hurricanes and Devils join the Bruins as the only teams thus far to clinch a playoff berth.

Alex Ovechkin Makes History (Again)

On March 21, Alex Ovechkin made history once again by passing Wayne Gretzky for the most 40-goal seasons in NHL history.

Ovechkin’s 2022-23 season marks his 13th 40-goal season and puts him at 13 for 16 in his career.

He scored his 40th goal on an assist from Dylan Strome in the first period of the Capitals-Blue Jackets game.

Ovechkin sits at 820 goals and is behind Gretzky’s 894 for the record.

If Ovechkin nets 10 more goals in the last 10 games, he will pass Gretzky and Mike Bossy for the most 50-goal seasons.

Jakob Chychrun Out for Ottawa

Just weeks after acquiring him from the Arizona Coyotes, Jakob Chychrun is likely to be out weeks for the Senators with a lower-body injury.

Chychrun has two goals and three assists in 12 games with the Senators.

Josh Anderson to Miss Rest of the Season

Josh Anderson will miss the rest of the season with a high ankle sprain.

Anderson collided with Mikhail Sergachev in the Canadiens/Lightning game and then crashed into the net.

With the Habs, Anderson has 21 goals on the year.
