Around the SEC: Week 7

posted October 16, 2021 in

This week the SEC saw the mighty fall as Alabama lost to Texas A&M in a very uncanny performance from the Crimson Tide.

Ole Miss won a shootout with Arkansas as both looked to get themselves back on track following losses the week prior.

Kentucky and Georgia continued to roll through competition and LSU continues to fall from grace.

It was a wild week in the south, so let’s run through the top headlines.

Bama Falls To A&M

From the opening snap, the Aggies came out ready to play. They outscored Alabama 17-3 in the first quarter and held a 14 point lead heading into the second half.

The Aggies then thwarted the Crimson Tide’s comeback in the second half to etch out a monumental upset.

The Aggies played this game conservatively, not doing anything relatively special.

A&M quarterback Zach Calzada looked good going 21-for-31 for 285 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception, but Bryce Young hung in there with him going 28-for-48 for 369 yards, three TDs and a pick as well.

The Bama offense outgained the aggies by over 200 yards, but they forced Bama to take risks, forcing two turnovers.

Tyree Johnson led the way with two sacks, and Lean O’Neal Jr. recovered a fumble.

Alabama played out of character, with 82 yards on eight penalties and failing to establish momentum in the game whatsoever.

A&M capitalized on mistakes and converted when it mattered, now the Tide are 5-1 dropping to No. 5 in the rankings.

They’ll have to win out the rest of the way and take down the Bulldogs in the SEC title game to get to the playoff.

The road is still there to get to the dance, but Jimbo Fisher’s Aggies added a big bump in what looked to be a smooth road.

As for his Aggies, they’re in the top-25 again and after going 3-2 before that game, the Aggies will hope this win rights the ship in the long run.

Ole Miss Won A Classic, What’s Next?

Two of the most polarizing teams in college football came off big losses that thwarted their hopes of undefeated seasons. This made the Razorbacks match up with the Rebels all the more important.

Whoever took the over made out well this past Saturday as the game produced 104 points and over 1,200 yards between the two squads.

Heisman front runner Matt Corral put forth an efficient game going 14-for-21 for 287 yards and two touchdowns and posting 94 yards and two scores on the ground. He didn’t turn the ball over and made smart decisions, but the rushing attack was fantastic.

Aside from Corral, the Rebels rushed for a combined 221 yards, with two players going over 100 yards. Snoop Conner had 110 yards and three touchdowns with an average of a whopping 9.2 yards per carry, and Henry Parrish Jr. produced 111 yards with an average of 6.2 yards per carry.

The Rebels offense looked like one of the best in college football, bouncing back from a tough loss to Alabama.

With only one ranked game the rest of the way, if Ole Miss takes care of business they could put themselves back in the playoff conversation.

Game of the Week: No. 11 Kentucky vs. No. 1 Georgia

The two lone undefeated teams in the SEC clash this Saturday in Athens in what figures to be the biggest game of the season for the Wildcats.

Georgia has won every big game and steamrolled their competition to this point, and Kentucky will hope the Bulldogs overlook them and allow them to continue their magical season.
