CommRadio Weekly Playlist: Jan. 25

Story posted January 26, 2023 in Arts & Entertainment by CommRadio Arts & Entertainment Department.

Here, members of the Arts and Entertainment Department will talk about the songs that dominated their playlists during the week and what makes them so good.

“Low” - SZA

Ever since the release of SZA’s album, “SOS,” SZA has been my most listened to artist just because of how addicting her new music has been.

After waiting so long after the debut of her first album this was highly anticipated for me and just about everyone else that tuned into her first album. Her melodic voice is perfect for the R&B sound that she creates and she doesn’t have a bad song on her first or second album.

One of my favorite songs on her sophomore album is “Low”. I feel like this is one of the more underappreciated songs on the album as “Kill Bill” and "Nobody Gets Me” take the spotlight.

“Low” has such an addicting beat and lyrics, it’s so easy to listen to it over and over again. The Travis Scott adlibs put it on another level, making it perfect for any occasion like walking around campus or having on during studying. - Sophia Clements

“Satellite” - Harry Styles

When the album “Harry’s House” came out last May, I gave it a listen, then didn’t think of it again. I am not going to lie and say I don’t like Harry Styles. Realistically, I’ve been a fan since his One Direction days.

I don’t remember if I heard it on TikTok or the radio, but all of a sudden I can’t stop listening to “Satellite.” The subtle, almost lo-fi pop song doesn’t do too much beyond a bridge with electric drums and synths, but its simplicity is what makes it so good.

Although it’s the eleventh track on the album, “Satellite” continues to grow in popularity. The song is mostly about Styles’ wish to be closer to someone, rather than just staying at a distance, like a “satellite.”

I don’t know why, but I get a random sense of nostalgia listening to it, and it’ll stay in my rotation for a while. I highly recommend you add it to yours. - Nick LaRosa

“No Hands” - Waka Flocka Flame (feat. Roscoe Dash & Wale)

Not to be too dramatic, but this semester is already getting the best of me. I found myself stressed out during “sylly week,” which should be illegal by the way, and my main source of happiness was Waka Flocka’s masterpiece “No Hands.”

There really is no explanation for it other than the song is just that good. The iconic intro phrase leading straight into the chorus is enough to make anyone’s day, especially a 20-year-old girl’s, significantly better.

Each verse has its own clever lines, all of which touch on “making it rain” in some way, but there’s something about Wale’s part that speaks to my soul.

Whether or not your ears have had the pleasure of listening to this timeless track, I highly suggest you stop what you’re doing right now and put it on. And just know, if you ever see me with my earbuds in, there’s a good chance “No Hands” is blasting. - Megan Kelby
