Neil Young – “The Times” Review

Story posted September 22, 2020 in Arts & Entertainment by Emily McGlynn.

Neil Young has been releasing music left and right recently. Not only did he release the album “Homegrown” recently, but he has also released a single and now an EP, titled “The Times.” Between June 2020 and now, the public has been able to enjoy 20 new songs from the folk rock legend.

Young recorded this seven-track EP in July 2020 during his fireside sessions, a home concert series. He included an updated version of his recent single “Lookin’ for a Leader 2020” and covered Bob Dylan’s iconic “The Times They Are A-Changin’.” Ultimately, Young is becoming more and more open with his beliefs as time passes.

A constant theme through Young’s music is the progression of the political climate in America. After all, songs like “Campaigner” and “Southern Man” were written about political events. In early August, Young sued President Donald Trump for using his music at a rally without a license during his campaign. Now, the Canadian singer’s new music is making a statement.

Neil Young would not be Neil Young without his simple acoustics and snazzy harmonica, though it is surprising that his voice is still intact. Young has been performing since the 1960s, and his voice sounds the same. While listening to this EP, it is reassuring to hear classic Neil Young singing good music. He’s not going anywhere.

Where “The Times” falls flat is the live recordings. Unfortunately, there is just nothing interesting about the live tracks on “The Times.” The guitar and the vocals on the studio versions have more power to them, and as a result, they’re much more enjoyable to hear. They do provide a nice trip down memory lane, but most audiences would prefer to listen to the better produced recordings.

Additionally, it is a little difficult to access this EP currently. “The Times” is only available through Amazon Music or by subscribing to Young’s website. Hopefully, major music streaming services will soon provide this EP as well.

In a nutshell, “The Times” is a time capsule that is somehow still relevant in our current day. This is a great piece of work to look back on but not something one would listen to every day. Ultimately, though, it is comforting to know Neil Young is still the same musician he’s always been and that there is more to come from him in the future.
