CommRadio Weekly Playlist: April 4

Story posted April 4, 2022 in

Here members of the Arts and Entertainment Department will talk about the songs that dominated their playlists during the week and what makes them so good.

“El Tesoro” - El Mató a un Policía Motorizado

In this track, one of my favorite contemporary Argentinian rock bands that redefined indie rock in South America did what they do the best, they created a sweet and romantic tune. This song, dedicated to a loved one, has lyrics and instrumentation different from any other sound any band has.

Starting the song with “Paso todo el dia pensando en vos,” the lead singer and bassist, Santiago Motorizado, sings about thinking about their loved one every single moment of the day. The chorus is a beautiful layered harmony, where many voices sing about not knowing why they are here, looking for their loved ones as if they were magnetized to them.

The instrumentation is clean and simple, with a catchy bassline and guitar leading the melody, this song is both addictive and endearing. Ending with a guitar solo accompanied by a xylophone and synths, the Argentinian band crafted a song that is indeed what the title suggests, a treasure. - Fernanda Lopez

“The Louvre” -  Lorde

With the weather getting cold again this week, I had some songs that always remind me of summer on repeat, and this was one of them.

This song is from Lorde’s 2017 album, “Melodrama.” This song, like the rest of the album, was produced by Jack Antonoff, who has produced albums for Taylor Swift and Lana Del Ray, and is the frontman of the indie band Bleachers. An Australian musician named Flume also co-produced this song.

“Melodrama” is an album all about being in a new relationship, including the moments before it starts, when it’s unsure if they will or they won’t.

This song in particular chronicles the story of a relationship that becomes all-encompassing. Lyrics like “drink up your movements, still I can’t get enough / I overthink your punctuation use” highlight how being in a relationship like this can consume you, even if you’re not totally sure that it’ll end well.

In the song, Lorde calls this relationship so good that “they’ll hang us in the Louvre,” which is a sweet sentiment about a budding relationship. - Izzy Charboneau

“Second Chances” - Kiana Ledè

Kiana Ledè is an R&B vocalist who celebrated success after the release of her first album, “Kiki,” in 2020. The album exemplified her growth as a person and artist in comparison to her preceding EPs, “Selfless” and “Myself.”

“Kiki” embodies themes of vulnerability, power, self-love, sexualization and feminism. One of the tracks from the album that made its way to my list of 2020 favorites was “Second Chances.”

In “Second Chances” Ledè demonstrates willpower as she stops herself from going back to her ex. She asserts her dominance and even suggests that he will beg her for a second chance.

However, this tough girl act is a bit of a front as Ledè admits that it is hard to walk away from the relationship.

Despite the affection she still holds for her ex and his efforts to win her back, she remains strong and continues to maintain her distance. Ledè is done giving “second chances” as it leaves her open to being hurt again.

6LACK’s verse takes the perspective of the aforementioned ex. He explains that he understands Ledè’s decision, but it’s still “a hard-to-swallow pill.”

He speaks on taking accountability and contemplates his potential growth from such actions.

The song is smooth, yet woeful. Ledè’s rich vocals and impassioned tone touches the heart of the listener, allowing one to feel every word.

Some other favorites from the album are “Forfeit,” “Canceled,” “Only Fan,” “Feel a Way,” and “Youth.” - Jah-Preece Landrum

“Island Song (Come Along with Me)” - Adventure Time & Ashley Eriksson

I’ve recently been catching up with “Adventure Time,” watching this amazing, animated show in its entirety.

Returning to Finn and Jake in the Land of Ooo has been a blast.

One thing really hit me hard with feelings of nostalgia and that would be the song that plays at the end of each episode, “Island Song (Come Along with Me),” sung by Ashley Eriksson.

Listening to it now as an adult I didn’t realize how beautiful a song it was, as it really captures the carefree and happy energy of the show itself.

I highly recommend giving it a listen and maybe even picking up the show along the way. - Jon Mead

“Cosmik Debris” - Frank Zappa

I don’t know what brought me back to this classic specifically, but I’m more than happy to say that I’ve been listening to quite a few of my favorite Frank Zappa tracks all throughout this week.

The best part of the experience of jamming to almost any of Zappa’s music is all about storytelling and satire. His lyrical improvisations are questionable and entertaining, always poking fun at life’s experiences. “Cosmik Debris” especially creates a fun relaxing atmosphere mixing jazz and rock elements alongside musical modifiers that help push the story along.

Zappa’s voice is perfect for his speak-singing style and draws in listeners. His overall style is so unique and experimental that it’s hard to find other artists who play into the same vibe in the same way that he does.

Honestly, if people don’t mind what can be, at times, controversial lyrics, delving into Zappa’s discography will always be worth it, especially for those who like rock music. - Erell Williams
