Penn State failed to overcome Maryland’s powerful offense over the weekend, ending with a 25-25 record on the season.

Game 1

The final regular season series started on Thursday with an offense masterclass between the two conference foes.

Down 3-0 in the bottom of the second, Jay Harry got a seven-run inning rolling with an RBI single. Bobby Marsh ended the inning with a two-RBI double to right field to put the Nittany Lions up by four.

The Terrapins added three more to their total in the top of the fourth before the blue and white went on a six-run tear. Kyle Hannon was credited with a sac fly in the fifth that scored one run, with five more being tacked on in the sixth from an onslaught of Penn Staters.

The visitors finally responded with a six-run inning in the top of the seventh that tied the game at 13. Penn State took back control in the bottom of the seventh with a Marsh walk and Josh Spiegel single.

However, Jordan Morales and Travis Luensmann failed to finish the Terrapins off in the ninth, resulting in a 17-15 defeat. In the top of the ninth, four different players recorded hits that resulted in the five-run inning.

Game 2

Headed into Friday off of the intense defeat, Penn State looked to bounce back after the announcement of head coach Rob Cooper stepping down.

The team did exactly that, with a two-RBI double from Thomas Bramley in the second and two separate RBI singles from Harry and CJ Pittaro later in the game. Maryland scored three runs in the fifth but couldn’t replicate the 21 hits it had in game one.

Tommy Molsky and Ryan Partridge improved the Penn State bullpens series performance with 10 hits and three runs allowed after the rotation struggled on Thursday. Molsky ended the day with all four of the Nittany Lion's strikeouts after facing 27 batters.

Penn State celebrated its 5-3 win with fireworks on Friday night before moving into the final game of the season.

Game 3

On Saturday, the program honored its 10 seniors while looking to leave Medlar Field at Lubrano Park above .500 on the year. Pittaro began the push for that goal with an RBI triple to put the blue and white up 1-0 early in the game.

After an Ian Petrutz sac-fly and a Matt Woods homerun, the Nittany Lions found themselves down 2-1 in the fourth. With Harry and Hannon on base, however, Pittaro and Johnny Piacentino gave Penn State the lead back off of multiple Maryland errors.

Riding high off a three-run inning, the offense quickly shut down for the rest of the game. With no production at the plate, the bullpen fell apart in the sixth and eighth innings leading to a 7-4 Maryland victory.

Penn State’s season comes to a close after winning only one of its last eleven games and missing out on the Big Ten tournament. Maryland’s season lives on as the No. 1 seed in the tournament and will face eighth-seeded Michigan State on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
