Singles Round Up: March 27
Singles Round Up – The Arts and Entertainment Department takes a look at some of the recently released singles from the past week.
“Call on Me” - Bebe Rexha
Bebe Rexha just released the second single from her soon-to-be-released third LP, semi-self-titled “Bebe.”
Rexha uses minimal lyrics and focuses heavily on the post-chorus instrumental which makes it a song for the dance floor. However, it gets repetitive and lacks creativity and punch.
The repetitiveness does add an element of catchiness that makes the song more enjoyable as it continues.
There is not much difference in the bridge as it is set up exactly like the pre-chorus, but the unexpected high notes on “high” and “need” add passion and draw more attention to the final chorus.
As the song is already repetitive, the bridge should have set itself apart from the rest of the song but instead recycles previous lyrics which comes off as lazy.
Overall, Rexha sends a positive message of empowerment with the lyrics, stressing that she is the best person to satisfy her needs. - Rachel Fisher
“That’s Not How This Works” - Charlie Puth (ft. Dan + Shay)
After releasing his self-titled album, “Charlie” last year, Charlie Puth’s “That’s Not How This Works” was dropped on March 31. His first single since the album.
This particular single has been teased for weeks through Puth’s TikTok and Instagram accounts. Fans were given little insiders into the process of the song’s production.
Waiting in anticipation.
This single’s depiction of a confusing break up is easily relatable. The back and forth of remember whens and I hate yous. That’s not how it works.
The rhythm of the song changes throughout, yet it has a flow that’s continuous. From the backtracking of drums, keyboard, and general production, everything works fluidly to create a great single.
Additionally, the pairing of Puth & Dan + Shay is magical. Each artist has the ability to hit crazy high notes and compliment one another at the same time.
As an added bonus, Puth and Sabrina Carpenter star in the music video which is an actual masterpiece. Check it out. You won’t regret it.
Hopefully, this is one of many singles to come from Puth. Who knows, maybe even another creative mash-up… or an album. Good things will come to those who wait. - Isabel Sweet

Isabel Sweet is a freshman with an intended major in Film Production at Penn State University. She is originally from Felton, DE. Outside of CommRadio she is involved with After the Whistle, PSU Club Swim, DASH, Dear Hero Program, Blue & White Society, Student Film Org., PSNtv, and College of Communication Student Council. Within these organizations she has been credited for camera operation, co-director, scoreboards, and more! She’s currently working on two student films and hopes to learn from every experience. Her goal is to work with a big entertainment & media corporation.
