State High to PSU: A Baseball Pipeline

Very few State College Area high school athletes have the opportunity to play a Division I sport in Happy Valley. Two Penn State baseball pitchers have made that transition from Little Lion to Nittany Lion over the past few years. We take a closer look at the State High to Penn State pipeline to the baseball diamond.

Mike D’Avella is a senior from West Chester, Pa., majoring in broadcast journalism with a minor in business. He is a sports director, producer, play-by-play voice, talk show personality and beat writer on the sports side of CommRadio. Mike is also a member of the John Curley Center for Sports Journalism. He has completed internships with the Philadelphia Phillies in the summers of 2014 and 2015, MLB.com Advanced Media in the spring of 2016, the State College Spikes Minor League baseball production department in the summer of 2016 and Interscope Records in Santa Monica, California. He is also the drummer in a State College based Alternative Rock band called “The New Feel” who has performed at venues such as the Bryce Jordan Center. Mike plans to pursue a career in sports media or the entertainment industry in the hopes of becoming a producer or radio personality for a sports or music station. Mary Pillot is a senior from Milesburg, Pennsylvania, majoring in broadcast journalism. She started her college journey at the Penn State DuBois campus where she was a shooting guard on the women’s basketball team. As a freshman, Mary broke the single-season record for 3-pointers, became a spokesperson on the PSUD recruiting video, and was named Rookie of the Year by her coach. After transferring to University Park, she became involved in the Production Assistant branch of CommRadio. After internships with Penn State Athletics and Little League International, Mary has experience with video board and game-day production. Mary is interested in pursuing a career in sport’s industry. Michael Marcantonini is a senior broadcast journalism major and entrepreneurship minor from Blue Bell, PA. He is the Sports Director of The LION 90.7 FM student radio station, where he also works as a play-by-play broadcaster and sports talk radio host.
