There are so many iconic cameos in movies. Some members of our Arts and Entertainment department wrote about some of the most iconic ones in cinematic history.

Justin Timberlake in “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping”

The Lonely Island (Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone) are best known for their “SNL: Digital Shorts,” which are widely considered to be the reason YouTube took off.

Maybe their biggest hits were when they stepped in the studio with Justin Timberlake, most notably for their Emmy-winning hit “D*ck In a Box.”

So when The Lonely Island made their magnum opus “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping,” a movie chock filled with high profile cameos, it was less of a question of if Timberlake would be in the movie but how he would fit into the plot.

While “Popstar” has most of their celebrity cameos play themselves, The Lonely Island expertly writes Timberlake in as Connor4Real's (Samberg) personal chef, Tyrus Quash, who should be “leaving the singing to the professionals.”

This clever wink at the audience even has a payoff as Quash eventually gets to perform on stage in a fish suit and then, in his confessional, excitedly tells the camera that he got to perform on stage.

The Quash character would’ve been funny no matter what, but Timberlake’s casting is what makes it perfect.

“Popstar” has so many exceptionally used cameos that it deserves a listicle of its own. But the tongue-in-cheek nods to Timberlake’s contributions to The Lonely Islands' rise to fame is comedy excellence, just like this entire movie. - Sophia D’Ovidio

Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in “Spider-Man: No Way Home”

After the “Spider-Man: No Way Home” trailer revealed that iconic villains from the Raimi and Webb universes were making their MCU debut, it was almost a given that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield would be teaming up with Tom Holland for this groundbreaking film.

However, nothing was confirmed going into opening night.

The reaction videos of theaters all around the world seeing Tobey and Andrew step through those portals says it all. Marvel did what nobody truly thought they would do, and made a Spider-Man film with all three actors who have portrayed Peter Parker on the big screen.

The execution could not have been more satisfying, with Tobey and Andrew’s Peter Parkers helping out Tom Holland’s after the death of his beloved Aunt May, and then teaming up with him for the final battle against all of their villains.

The three Peters formed a brother-like bond throughout the film’s conclusion, and had a chemistry that reminded viewers that there isn’t truly one best Spider-Man.

Carrie Fisher in “Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery”

While most people remember the groovy action moments in Austin Powers, who can forget about Carrie Fisher’s therapist cameo?

Dr. Evil and his son, Scott, go to therapy together to try to solve the rift between the two of them.

The scene starts out with a father and son actually solving problems, but when Dr. Evil and Scott walk in, they prove they’re nothing like the typical father-son duo.

Carrie Fisher is magnificent in this scene, portraying the role of the therapist who tries to turn everything into a metaphor or a life lesson.

While she was primarily known for her role of Princess Leia in the Star Wars franchise, she was also an author and mental health advocate. In her memoir, “Shockaholic,” she admitted that she regularly used electroconvulsive therapy to help with bipolar disorder and overcoming drug addiction.

Carrie Fisher was funny and fierce, but she was also never ashamed to speak up about mental health, which makes the therapy scene in Austin Powers so ironic and powerful in her own way almost thirty years later. - Adrianna Gallucci
