Around the Big 12: Week 10
Week 9 of College Football has concluded, and this week brought tons of excitement amidst a plethora of big-time upsets.
The Big 12 had an exciting week that included some teams making their case to be in the rankings and others falling out.
The biggest game in the Big 12 was a matchup between No. 16 ranked Baylor and previously ranked Texas.
The Baylor Bears found themselves trailing 14-10 at the end of the first quarter due to a pair of touchdown passes from Texas quarterback Casey Thompson.
Both teams remained scoreless until they both found the endzone with a rushing touchdown. Texas continued to lead 21-17 heading into the fourth quarter.
Baylor quickly scored on a one-yard touchdown run by running back Ben Sims and later punched another one in with a 32-yard run by running back Abram Smith.
Baylor’s defense held Texas to a field goal on the following drive and held off the Longhorns’ final push at the end of the game.
Baylor won the game by a score of 31-24.
Baylor running back Abram Smith finished the game with 20 carries for 145 yards and one touchdown.
Heisman candidate Bijan Robinson had a rough outing as he rushed 17 times for 43 yards and a score.
Baylor improves to 7-1 while Texas falls to 4-4.
The Bears jumped to No. 14 in this week’s AP rankings and earned the No. 12 spot in the first edition of the College Football Playoff rankings.
The other notable game in the Big 12 included a battle between No. 22 ranked Iowa State and West Virginia.
The game was tightly contested throughout with both teams trading touchdowns. Iowa State held the lead after three quarters by a score of 31-24.
The Mountaineers began the fourth quarter with a 22-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jarret Doege to wide receiver Winston Wright Jr. and tied the game at 31.
On their ensuing drive, the Mountaineers scored again on a 2-yard run by Leddie Brown to take the lead.
The Cyclones would have one last chance to tie the game after a costly fumble by Iowa State’s Breece Hall at the goal line.
They drove down to the West Virginia 25-yard line before a false start penalty and an incompletion on a last-second heave by quarterback Brock Purdy eventually ended the game.
The Mountaineers finally got their Top-25 win as they held on to win by a score of 38-31.
Breece Hall finished with 24 carries for 167 yards and a score.
West Virginia quarterback Jarret Doege ended with 30 completions for 370 yards and three touchdowns.
Doege’s teammate Leddie Brown rushed 22 times for 109 yards and two touchdowns for the Mountaineers.
Iowa State drops out of the AP rankings and fails to make the first rankings by the College Football Playoff Selection Committee.
No. 4 Oklahoma took care of business against Texas Tech and won by a score of 52-21.
Sooners’ quarterback Caleb Williams had a stellar day as he completed 23 passes for 402 yards and six touchdowns.
No. 15 Oklahoma State throttled Kansas by a score of 55-3.
Quarterback Spencer Sanders led the charge for the Cowboys as he threw for 157 yards and two touchdowns on 12 completions. He also ran for 53 yards and a score.
The Cowboys jump to No. 11 in the AP Rankings and the College Football Playoff rankings.
Kansas State was able to defeat TCU by a score of 31-12.
Deuce Vaughn carried the ball 20 times for 109 yards and two scores for the Wildcats.
Week 10 in the Big 12 features a matchup between Texas and Iowa State and a battle between Oklahoma State and West Virginia.
