Around the NHL: Jan. 23

Story posted January 23, 2023 in CommRadio, Sports by Adrianna Gallucci

Another week in the NHL means more drama, more news, more great plays and another week closer to the hot Florida sun for the All-Star Game. Here’s the latest news from the NHL:

Out with Boudreau and In with Tocchet

The Vancouver Canucks announced on Jan. 22 that they have fired head coach Bruce Boudreau and have hired Rick Tocchet to replace him.

The Canucks have lost 10 of their last 12 and have lost their last three.

Boudreau sensed that the end was near while saying an emotional goodbye to the Canucks faithful and fighting back tears in the postgame press conference.

Tocchet was previously a coach for the Arizona Coyotes, Tampa Bay Lightning and Pittsburgh Penguins and will coach his first Vancouver game on Jan. 24 against the Chicago Blackhawks.

Caufield Out for the Season

Cole Caufield will undergo surgery on his right shoulder and miss the remainder of the season with the Montreal Canadiens.

Caufield, a first-round draft pick in 2019, played 46 games for the Habs this season with 26 goals and 10 assists. The wing leads the team in goals and is second in points.

The Canadiens have recalled Alex Belzile from the Laval Rocket.

All-Star Game Rosters Set

With the completion of the Fan Vote, the All-Star rosters are set and ready to go.

12 players were selected by fans via social media, three from the four NHL divisions.

Mikko Rantanen (Colorado), Nathan McKinnon (Colorado) and Connor Hellebuyck (Winnipeg) will represent the Central Division. Rantanen is tied for third in the league in goals.

In the Atlantic, Auston Matthews (Toronto), David Pastrnak (Boston) and Andrei Vasilevskiy (Tampa Bay) got the nod, all very deserving of the Fan Vote. Pastrnak is fifth in the league for points and is leading the league-best Bruins in a great season.

Leon Draisaitl (Edmonton), Bo Horvat (Vancouver) and Stuart Skinner (Edmonton) were selected to represent the Pacific Division, and Skinner will be making his first appearance. Draisaitl is second in the league for points.

New York seems to be the place to be in the Metro as Artemi Panarin (Rangers), Adam Fox (Rangers) and Ilya Sorokin (Islanders) earned the nods to represent the division. Additionally, this is the first ASG appearance for each player. Sorokin is tied for third in the league for save percentage.

All-Star Game Jerseys Released

Adidas released the designs for the ASG, which is a nod to the 1994 ASG jerseys.

The Eastern Conference jerseys have a black base with white sleeves and a white bottom with mint and green accents on the sleeves. There’s also an orange and black puck that says “NHL” in the center of the jersey under “Eastern” and “Conference.”

The numbers on the back are mint. The Western Conference jerseys are an inverse with a white base, mint sleeves and bottoms and black and pink accents. The numbers on the back are black. Both jerseys have the Adidas logo on the top of the jersey.

The ASG will be played on Feb. 4 at 3 P.M. in Sunrise, Florida.
